I noticed that the bottom 1/5 or so (dock area) of my 3GS screen is darker then the rest of the screen. ie: I used a pic w/ a white background for the wallpaper when I 1st noticed it as its more obvious. With darker color wallpapers its less obvious, but I can still tell now. Its not a straight cut off either, its more of a blending darkening.

I dont know if I'm explaining it properly, but I know ts not dust, I didnt drop the phone, it is not specific dark spots, its not water damage, etc.

Is this normal for the screen to be darker around the dock area? Thanks

This is a product defect. If you're still in warranty, have Apple replace. It's an abnormality. I had the problem when my 3G got older... My 4 year old MacBook is doing the same, slightly dimmer in the bottom left corner of the screen that only begun about a year ago. Happens with age I suppose, I'm not completely sure what the exact cause is. Anyone willing to shed some light?

What do you want us to say? We have no idea how it looks like.
All you can do is go to Apple.

Thanks for responding, here are some pics to show what I'm trying to say.

Here is the pic I used for my background. Note its all white except for the apple.

Here is what the same image looks like as my home screen. Note the bottom 1/3 or so and you will see a blending/gradual darkening.

The dock icons are in full color, so I dont think its a problem w/ the screen. I did a search and couldnt find another topic like this. Also I just noticed this because I usually have a darker background. Even on a darker background the blending is still noticable to me now.

It's a shade image.

Location is System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/SpringBoardUIFramework/

Image is called WallpaperGradientPortraitFull@2x.png

To get rid of it, replace it with a transparent image size 1x960px

EDIT: sorry forgot you said 3gs, so image is named WallpaperGradientPortraitFull.png and size is 1x480px

Thanks, but I dont know how to make one? Anyone have a transparent png file for the 3GS?

Cool thx man. So I can just save that png file you provided, rename it to WallpaperGradientPortraitFull.png and just copy it over to replace the existing one?
