Hello. My girlfriend was removing a skin off the bottom of her 13" Retina Macbook Pro. She said she was not pulling too hard, but suddenly heard a pop and noticed the bottom plate was open and some internals visible (See below).

I am not there to see it in person, but do you think this is simply a matter of popping it back into place? Is the aluminum bent beyond repair? Looking for any guidance to next steps, apart from asking Apple directly (which we will do if there are no other options).

Aluminum is a pretty soft metal and it will take a lot of time and effort to straighten. It will never be the way it was before. If it's really bothersome, consider replacing it with a used bottom case.

similar thing happened to me 2 weeks ago, just found my macbook pro 2017 bent out of the blue. My spacebar ended up stuck. I had to use dust off to make it work again. The unit is still bent and doesn't close all the way. Not sure whether to take it to a genius bar.

Your battery is probably swollen. Please take it to the Genius Bar! They may even replace the battery for free, though I can't guarantee that!

I took it in and you were right. Swollen battery. Luckily they are replacing it for free! They have to replace the whole topcase (battery , keyboard, trackpad).
