For some reason, I cannot use the App Store, do upgrades, and it will not even load Apple.com or any associated Apple pages. I can't upgrade my system, as a result, or get support. Any ideas?

I would recommend calling apple support.
As long as you are connected to the internet they should be able to remotely login into your machine and see what’s going on. If not provide assistance in doing so.

If there’s an Apple store near you, pop in and let the person up front know you need help setting up your Mac. Yes, even if you bought it elsewhere.

Check the clock on the system. If the time is off web pages will see it as a expired security certificate and not load.

To fix it you set the clock manually, verify you can connect to the sites, and then reset it to automatically set the time from the internet.
