It’s been about a week and it still works. No reported stolen or anything. Deal too good to be true ? Guy bought 3 and wasn’t able to sell them launch day. And he needed the money for Christmas he said.

Umm yeah. Zero chance that was a legit sale. Either stolen or under contract and he's not paying the installments.

Only a matter of time before you are the proud owner of a $400 brick.
Not really.

OP do an replacement at Apple. I contacted Apple about a phone (iPhone 7) I got for 200$ off ebay. It was under the 1 yr warranty. I was worried about it being a brick eventually, But apple told me if I get it replaced, the next one wont be tied to any carriers etc.

6 months later phone is still working great. Just for the heck of it, I messaged the guy and asked if it was on a carrier plan, he said yeah and that he couldn't pay for it anymore and wanted to know if the phone still worked. Told him it works fine!

I have all emails and convos from Apple and ebay if anyone wants to see!

So apple replaced your phone just because you were worried there was an ownership issue with it?

Doesn't make sense. Why not just take stolen phones to get replaced? Or even your own phone on an installment plan and stop paying...

I can understand someone falling on tough times and selling things off. But $400? I haven’t checked online recently, but I’d assume he could get nearly $800 for an x in mint condition. Possibly more. You know it’s not legit, that’s why you made this thread. Either that or it’s a humble brag gone wrong.

I would just make sure you cover yourself and know exactly what you're buying. There are alot of risks associated, but use your best judgement.

He paid $400 for a phone that retails for $1000. It’s not available in all areas, so it is still pulling a bit of a premium. He knows he paid WAY less than it’s worth. Even $750 I could understand, but $400 is a joke. My guess is an iPhone X with a cracked screen and no charger would go for over $400 on eBay right now. If everything works out that is awesome, but this sale stinks.

I hate to say it but in a few months they may be blacklisted due to either being stolen or their bills not being paid. You know the old saying, if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. That being said I hope I am wrong and it is the deal of the century.

Turn around and sell it while it still works and its not locked up.
You'll make an easy $400 or so.
And with that money buy a new one and be stress free;)
You never know what could go down with this unit you have now.

I agree. Especially given if the OP didn't have any concerns with this transaction, then why make a thread asking for feedback or reassurance.

Perhaps they was a minor issue with the phone and the op took the chance of getting it replaced to circumvent the issue cropping up later.

You didn’t get his name, phone number, address did you not? Why do people fall for this? Please come back here and tell us your sobbing story when things go south.

I bet you don’t buy/sell things often through Craigslist. When you do one day, I’d like to see how willing you are in giving out your personal information to strangers, or inviting them into your house. Because when you do, you might end up telling another sobbing story of being robbed or having your identity stolen.

Sounds like it's more of just a "I got an iPhone X for $400" type of thread than anything else.

You are right. And that is why I won’t buy from craigslist or eBay, ever. I want to know where I got the phone from so I will buy from Apple or Samsung or the carriers. Far too many fools out there that want to get something for very little thinking that it’s legit. I’ll sell to a friend or family member.

Personally, I have gotten to the point where I don't even sell my Apple devices anymore used. I used to frequent eBay, but with all the fraud that's on there, it's absolutely ridiculous . And even craigslist, it's nice to have the cash in hand, but I don't even trust any of the people that are on craigslists or their intentions of what they really are looking for behind a sale. So either just keep my devices until they are no longer usable or give them to someone else I know.

If it’s on contract swapping it will make no difference. The replacement will be registered with the network and still get disconnected if bill not paid. That is a fact

OP: Fair play to you. You took a risk - knowing the story was inplausble at a large discount and you may get away with a discounted iPhone... or you may get a brick. That seems a fair roll of the dice.
