This is strange. I would definitely contact O2 if you haven't already.
I bought my iPhone 3G at the Trafford Centre, on Saturday,
and was connected immediately after activation of the unit had completed.
I left the store with signal and able to make calls.
R-Fly
tried to ring them before, but they closed at 9
They are open at 8am
What kind of compensation do you think I should ask for?

Are you sure they are not activated or are you just outwith O2's coverage?
Their coverage is easily the worst of the major networks in the UK. I get no service in my home.
Have a look at http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/14/iphone_activations/
According to one or two sources I have, there's basically a three-working delay in getting connected for most customers.

Remember you'll also need to be within the O2 coverage for the phone to recognise that you have been activated. They can't activate your phone if you don't have a signal!

I am having the same situation, I was starting a new contract and having my O2 PAYG number transferred, since 8:50 PM on Sunday I haven't had any service on my PAYG SIM and hadn't had any prior to that on my contract SIM.
I spoke to O2 at around 11 AM today, they said it would be sorted by 8:50 PM tonight. I am still without service.
Your not alone! I've had mine since Friday and still getting the 'no service' message. Spoke with o2 three time today the last being about 8.30 and they assure me it will be activated within the next 24 hours. But then again they did tell me at 4pm today it would be within the next 5 hours.
