what about ftp? she opens the ftp app, then i connect from my computer wherever i happen to be and can transfer files to her photo folder on her ipad. next time she opens photos, all the new galleries are there?

Um, no. There's no file system on the iPad, so things just don't work that way.

Do you have any iOS devices yourself? If not, perhaps you should get one for yourself and familiarize yourself with how they work before considering giving one to your Mom.

You can't do that on the iPad.

And even if that worked isn't it much simpler for your mom to open an app like Flickr or MobileMe, that's always updated with the latest pictures, instead of opening a FTP client, wait for you to send her photos and then opening the Photos app?

Nope, not joking. Well, there is a file system, but it's hidden from the user. This is probably the number one complaint you hear about iOS. Well, that or the too-simple and inflexible notification system.

But anyway, in iOS, each app has a separate way of storing and handling data inside it. The only way to get data in and out of an app is through whatever means the app devs have provided for that app. It gets pretty confusing sometimes trying to remember what you can do with which app. :(

The iPad's photo app is one of the most limited in the file handling aspect. The only way you can add/delete photos to it, and reorganize albums, is to sync with iTunes.

what about a jailbroken ipad?

Well, jailbreaking *is* all about gaining access to the file system. But first of all, the interface on the jailbroken software for handling files is clunky, and if your mom isn't used to managing files in a directory structure on a computer, she'll quickly get lost. And second of all, it doesn't really help with your goal of getting photos in albums onto your mom's iPad, because iTunes/iPad manages the photos in a coded database, and jailbreaking by itself doesn't give you a means to write to this database.

ftp?? you are seriously making this more complicated than it needs to be.

Since for some reason you think moms is connecting to the internet on dialup using her ipad since every online solution is too slow for you.

Just do this:
connect to your moms computer, transfer all the photos to her computer, import them into iphoto or whatever.

When she plugs ipad into itunes - it will sync new photos.

Done.

I thought OP's mom doesn't have a computer. But if she does, that will be the solution, of course.

But really, OP should just try flickr app first before chasing after other solutions, on a decent wifi connection, speed really shouldn't be a problem.

There is another option- the Goodreader App. You can do a wireless transfer of pictures from your Macbook to her iPad. I use this app all the time with great success to transfer all sorts Of files. Info from their site:
http://goodreader.net/gr-man-tr-wifi.html

Once you've transferred a file into Goodreader on the ipad, you open it and use the toolbar on the bottom to save the picture into your Photo app (it's the little camera icon on the tool/task bar.)

If your mother doesn't have a computer this won't help you, but for the sake of completeness here is how I solved the problem with my parents.

As some others have suggested, I share a dropbox folder between my mac and theirs. Then on their mac I have an Automator script watching this folder, and when photo files turn up it imports them into iPhoto automatically.

I have the iPad set to sync photos from their Mac, so next time they sync the iPad the photos just show up on the Photo app.

So all I need to do is drop the photos into a folder on my mac, and then the next time they sync their iPad, there they are.

1. Computer and iPad needs to be on the same local network.
2. OP has stated they don't want the mom to have to click and save each photo one by one.
3. Saved photos would all end up in the Camera Roll, no way to organize them into separate albumes.

Here is a screenshot of the folder IN the ipad- this is where your files, or in your case, pictures, would be transferred to. You can do a simple drag and drop:

I think this is one of the best ways to access the ipad's file system that you refer to above.

Oops, you posted before I saw this. Forgot they were so far apart!

I am sure that this would help others; i use it as well, also with the Automator "folder action" setup.:)

However, for the OP, you could set up the Dropbox on your Mom's ipad, that would be a mirror of one on your Macbook (ie. The same account); this could then be organized into folders, with the relevant pictures in each one. Granted they won't be in the Photo app on the ipad, but Dropbox shows them just fine.

Here is some info from their site about setting up a dropbox photo gallery:
http://www.dropbox.com/help/18

The only difference from their info, is that she would access the pictures directly with the Dropbox app on her Ipad, as opposed to in a web browser

Install "Dropbox" on both machines. If you are both using the same account you just drag and drop the photos into dropbox at your end and they will automatically appear in her dropbox.

I bought my mom an ipad, she's never taken to computers but i think the ipad will be fun for her. I've loaded it up with hundreds of albums/photos of all her grandkids, but she doesn't live anywhere near any of us (her kids). Is there a simple way that I could share or send a photo album/folder to my mom from my computer and have it download to her ipad, and appear as an album in the photos app, just like all the other photos? ideally i'd need a way to do this on a mac and on windows. thanks!

I haven't read every post in the thread but didn't see the app Cinq mentioned. I allows an iDevice user to either upload photos from their device to a computer wirelessly but also allows the user to view photos from the computer on their iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. All you have to do is load their server app on the desired computer after getting the app (free, I believe) and your Mom will be able to view any photos you choose to share.

cinq looks like a great app, but again relies on the internet and doesn't actually store anything on the ipad, i'll give it a shot though as it would save us from uploading photos (flickr), and probably has a better gallery ui than dropbox.

hmmm. just thinking out loud here... but does SugarSync perform the same as Dropbox with the need to pull each photo down individually?

Maybe SugarSync gets the OP what they are after.
