Long-ish story:

I promised my kids that for Christmas they'd get new phones, of course they wanted a plus or the X series and of course I said no.

Fast forward to black Friday weekend, and we were heading off to VZW as we have been with them for years, yet one of my daughters gets sick, so we turn the car around.

We make the trip to VZW yesterday and start talking to the VZW rep in a corporate store (not one of those kiosks). First off the place is empty, Both the customers and employees. Seems unusual because the entire mall is jumping. I ask about promotions and incentives as a VZW customer looking to upgrade. He says there are none, what you see is what you pay (he literally said that). I told him, that even apple is offering a 100 dollars more on trade-ins when you get the XR, but he shrugs - clearly he didn't want to be talking to me, and he wanted to go back to his phone. We walk out and go to the ATT store in the mall.

The differences are stark, many employees in the store, and I had put my name on a list to wait for my turn. I was expecting this sort of experience at VZW.

ATT had a number of promotions, the one we took advantage was the BOGO, sadly, this was limited to the XR and XS. Looks like my kids will be getting an XR after all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ They're elated of course and go to pick colors. My wife picks out an XS color she wants and I wasn't going to buy any because I have an X. They assured me, since I owned this outright, its unlocked and I'll be able to keep it.

In the course of talking I start mulling things over and since I have two kids, one gets a free phone and I only have one wife (I'm working on that ;) ). I was only buying one phone but in a weird twist of logic, it made more sense to trade in my X and get an XS because it wouldn't cost me anything and the trade in for the X will offer more credits then had I not done it.

So in the end, I got an Xs, as did my wife, and the kids got the Xr models.

I'm very disappointed by VZW's cavalier attitude and during the Christmas season not offering any promotions which doesn't make sense, but in this day and age, brand loyalty is a thing of the past when I can save a lot of money thanks to the Bogo promotion.

Good story. I’m stuck with Verizon because they have by far the best coverage where I live. But congrats to you on the new phones.

We wanted to stick with VZW, and they have better coverage where I travel too, but buying two phones and getting two phones for free is just too compelling, especially in light of how VZW's attitude.

One of the reasons I have always stayed with Verizon aside from the outstanding coverage, was their Customer service. I stopped at my Verizon corporate store a week before Black Friday, my new work iPhone 8 Plus (My main line is a XS Max) was defective, not only did they replace it with a new device, but they waived the re-stocking fee _and_ applied a $50.00 credit to my bill for the inconvenience. Even with quick questions, the ‘611’ outreach number has had knowledgeable representatives with very little hold times.

Point is, Verizon customer service isn’t indicative of being poor everywhere, it really depends on the store and who you speak with. I have been with Verizon for five years years now and can’t imagine using Any other carrier, even though I don’t agree with some of their surcharges and upgrade line fee’s, and another added perk, I receive a monthly discount with Verizon through my employer.

Always good to have some consumer feedback especially for service providers, because your usually with them for a while.
Thanks for the post, I called Tesco Mobile yesterday and upgraded my plan to their Black Friday offer. I pay £1 a month more and go from 6GB to 10GB and from 1500 mins to 5000 mins.

I’m a big time user lol!! But when I’m home it’s all on WiFi. I like them because they don’t put your price up mid contract, have freindly staff and their app and website is awesome, also getting Tesco club card points helps.

Funny thing that when I wanted to buy an Samsung galaxy S9 a short time ago I went to Verizon and I asked them for a promotion or a price match with Samsung who would give me $150 off at the time and Verizon said no, so I did buy the phone but, I Bought it from Samsung instead. Interesting that they wouldn’t price match. Rep was polite but I’m not gonna pass up $150 off.

I was a long time Verizon Wireless customer for 10 years, and I finally got tired of the attitude from store employees and customer service reps. In 10 years as a Verizon customer, I came across one store employee who was actually helpful.

I'm not criticizing the people themselves, because I am sure the attitude stems from above and works its way down through the company.

Even though the coverage wasn't as good when I switched to T-Mobile 4 years ago, the customer service made up for it. Now, in my area at least, T-Mobile is on par with Verizon's coverage. I'm hoping T-Mobile's culture doesn't change if the proposed Sprint merger goes through.

There seems to be a level of arrogance, that comes from not only being the largest but also having the most robust network. I'm all for brand loyalty, but when a competitor is offering what amounts to 1/2 off and they don't respond. I'm going to to with the competitor.

There was a reason why the VZW store was empty, and a reason why ATT and T-Mobile were busy, they were offing the same product for less. Life is expensive, and if I can save money why not.

The OP's story is almost a mirror of how I ended-up switching from Verizon to AT&T many years ago... I couldn't believe how arrogant they were, even in corporate stores, repeatedly. I have consistently found AT&T customer service to be quite good in comparison.

Also, I've found AT&T coverage in the Northeast U.S. where I am, seems to have caught up with Verizon's, at least in my experience.
