Thanks for the tip, Ccrew! I'll pursue that as suggested and see how it goes. The Apple rep indicated on the phone that Apple had made the policy adjustment recently, back in December and offered to consult his manager to see if there was something they could do to at least offer a partial date adjustment or something but then came back, no dice. I expect I'll get the same response here but we'll see. It's worth a shot I think.

Actually, I'd go back to Best Buy and ask for a price adjustment if they didn't. From their site:

"Open-box products are returned by customers, served as store display models, or were opened for inspection due to package damage. They are tested to assure proper function. See store for specific warranty and return policy questions. Clearance products include new, unopened, factory-sealed products that are either discontinued, overstock, or end of stock. They come with the original manufacturer's warranty."

I'd read "original manufacturers warranty" to be 1 year from the date you purchased, not 1 year from the date someone else did. Contrary to the jump up and down methodology I've seen suggested here I'd approach Best Buy calmly and methodically with their policy in hand if Apple denies it. Can't hurt. It's not like they don't frequently discount open box items with coupons, and store managers do have pricing discretion. Shoot for a discount if nothing else to offset the cost of Applecare.

That's a fantastic idea! THANKS! Really appreciate your posting that BB Policy! I'll give that a try today and see what they say.

There are two separate policies listed there- one for open box and one for clearance. Read closely.

Ah! Good eye! After reading that policy more closely, I'm thinking that I'm not going to get much more than what I got. Probably why I got such a good deal. No worries. I can always get AppleCare and still come out ahead further than if I bought a new machine. I'm still going to bring it to their attention and see if I can get some love but even if they aren't feeling generous, not gonna stress. That's just how I roll.

Just one of the many things so wrong with this country. So best buy messed up, and then you demand they sell you a brand new iMac for the same price you paid for an open box item regardless what was in the box sounds like you should have just returned it instead of whining.

Thumbs up for you. I totally agree with your point. Some people are abusing their "rights" as a consumer. This is a small part of a reason why businesses fail here in the States.

Just an update: I went to Best Buy today and presented my situation to them. They explained that they agreed that the Best Buy statement for manufacturer warranty is supposed to be a full term but they can't force Apple to change their policy and so what they were willing to do was to give me a full 12 months of Geek Squad warranty repair. I told them thanks. However, I'm about as interested in that as I am in having my car roll over my foot so I'll just spring for the AppleCare plan and call it a day.

I agree with the read, but it's arguably *just* ambiguous enough that it could be read either way. I'm of the mindset to try. Most they can say is no, right?

I've had great luck at Best Buy with their open box. Several weeks ago when they had a 10% off open box, I bought an absolutely like new 13" MBA for $850 (battery showed 2 cycles). Then, two days later, I went back to the store to look at other things and saw they had another promotion - purchase their 1YR Geeksquad support for $79 and take 20% additional off their open box models. Right on the spot I lucked out and bought a new openbox 13" rMBP for $1079 plus tax, PLUS being their silver member I received a 3x reward points coupon in the mail which gets me almost $70 of reward points.

The box was opened on this rMBP, but the Apple seal on the inside was intact. It was literally brand new. I registered it with Apple and have full warranty on it.

On both open box Macbooks I asked them open it up on the spot, I checked them before I bought it. They had no problem opening them for me.

Agreed, no wonder these big box companies keep closing down. I'm sure he feels proud that he ripped Best Buy off for a new iMac. Save your money like the rest of us hardworking people do.
