After yesterday, retailers with old product are supposed to be discounting the iPod touch by 20 dollars (like Best Buy is) so that when you go home, you can plug it in, upgrade to the new software for 20 dollars and still pay the 299/399 price point.

If you paid the full price after the keynote, you should go back to the retailer and get the 20 dollar credit from them and use that for the software update.

If you paid the full price before the keynote, it wouldn't hurt to see if your retailer of choice will credit you the price difference.

Apple will credit you within 14 days (to my knowledge.)

so i called the main apple number, and since i bought it in store, i had to call the store i got it from...

then after arguing with a few people for 10 mins, i finally got though and was told i would be credited $20 on what i paid them, so then I can play the $20 online.

I guess this works... but what a pain in the ass...

Hi guys,

I'm from Canada and I bought my ipod touch 16gb a week ago from an apple store. Aside, from the $20 upgrade, they dropped the price of the ipod touch from cnd449 to cnd419. When I called the store and asked them whether I could get the price difference back and get a free upgrade to my ipod touch, they told me they would drop the price to cnd399 which means I get back the price difference plus the 20 dollars for the upgrade. All I have to do is bring the receipt and they will do it for me.

I hope that helps.:)

To avoid any confusion, I just went to the apple store and presented my receipt and they gave me cnd50 credit; cnd30 for the price adjustment from cnd449 to cnd419 and cnd20 for the software upgrade. I believe this will only be available if you bought your ipod within 14 days of a price adjustment, so my guess is only 2nd January onwards would you be able to get some credit back.

Btw, I went back and purchased the software upgrade through iTunes and it works:)

I called the lovely people over in Cupertino, complained saying that it didn't work , and they credited me back my $20 without any questions. The best part, though, was in my process of "upgrading" back to 1.1.1, I misspelled something in the command prompt, and I had to restore back to 1.1.3. And guess what showed up on my Springboard? Yeah, curse those darn apps that I guess I got for free.:apple:

I just bought one from J&R Music for two reasons: It was $359 for the 16gb and I didn't have to pay taxes.

I'm just wondering if apple will give me the update for free too, if my ipod doesn't come with it. I still don't mind paying the $20 dollars for the update anyways. $359 + $20 is $379, which is better than the $425 I'd have to pay buying and updated one from apple with tax.

Let me know.

Appreciated.

What is the number you called? I bought mine at Costco yesterday after the announcement and had to pay the $20-. Thanks!

Went to Best Buy

I bought my iPod Touch last night around 8 pm and paid $299 for it. I brought it home and sucked up the $20 "software upgrade" even though I thought it was BS to have to purchase it. I read this thread about an hour and a half ago and went to the Best Buy website to see how much they were charging for it. On the site, an 8GB Touch is $265.99. I immediately called the local Best Buy I bought it from and asked them WTF. The customer service rep that answered the phone said to just bring in my receipt and they would credit me back the difference. I raced over to the Best Buy with receipt in hand and they credited me back the difference in price plus the tax difference. Then of course I got an email on my BlackBerry from Mac Mall that they're selling the 8GB Touch for $258.98. Oh well, you win some, you lose some...:(

No, it's not crap

Here's proof that it was $265.99 on the best buy website. I actually printed out the page before I went to Best Buy to get the refund. I just went back to the Best Buy website to see if it was still $265.99 and it IS when you add it to your cart.
