Enjoying Basil Hayden, neat, this evening!

PS - Just learned about Infinity bottles and eager to hear if anyone has done this.

Is this thread confined to Bourbon Whiskies, or does it include discussion of all whiskies?

If the former, I imagine that you will only receive responses from American posters, as those of us from Across The Pond who do occasionally partake of a dram, will rarely sample bourbon.

However, some years ago, there was - if memory serves - an excellent whiskey/whisky thread on this site.

Thanks @Huntn , I was looking for the older thread but hadn't found it yet.

Fair question... as there is a Whiskey thread I'm inclined to leave this one as Bourbon and see where it goes. I am happy to see the other thread and will read through it as well.

I know it is trendy, but I really like Buffalo Trace

BT is what got me started! I never developed a taste for Bourbon/Scotch in the past, but I kept hearing about BT on the JRE podcast and honestly, I fell prey to FOMO. Now I have a hard time finding it, when you ask at a liquor store you either get a hard NO or they stare at you with contempt, LOL. Thankfully I have 2 bottles in reserve.

What is nice, I live next to two locations that usually have it and they are not liquor stores. Now my Eagle Rare 17, will most likely come from a liquor store...

Total Wine and Bevmo for me usually have a pretty darn good collection, however they don't get everything...

Another one, which no thanks to my wife who loved the tv show and one of the stars, is "Brothers Bond". And it is actually pretty darn good. Definitely get the Bottled in Bond or Cask Strength. Not to shabby.

My go to's are Weller's and Buffalo Trace.
Stellum is good but no longer made so if you see a bottle under $40 grab it.

There are so many good bottles around $100, it all depends on your taste.

For a bargain, get any of the Costco Kirkland brands when they drop. Barton's 1792 is the distillery. My bourbon group, which has a few bourbon snobs, rated it best bottle at the price point.

There are a couple of shows you should look for. The first one is:

The main narrator gave me my tour of Buffalo Trace. Since one of my buddies is an exec at Jim Beam, we got a true behind the scenes tour. My one regret, they had a bottle of Pappy in the store and I didn't buy it.

The second one is:

Both are very informative and interesting.

If I bought a bottle of Pappy's at MSRP, I'd be flipping it rather than drinking it.

Both are very informative and interesting.

I'll have to check it out.

I'll post it later but I was told, and now have read, how to make a "poor mans Pappy". My references were different but it involves a mixture of Larceny an MM Cask Strength. Verbally I was told 2 parts Larcent 1 part MMCS.

Have you tried this combination? They also mention Weller's 12yr as being "middle class" substitute for Pappy's (supposedly Pappy's that didn't make the cut) but it hard to find and price is $150-$200 which is well above MSRP

That's the problem with a lot of brands, they get popular and sellers jack up the price. I've seen Buffalo Trace as high as 60 and it's good, but not 60 good.

Not yet, I have the parts but didn't mix them yet because the gentleman that told me about it suggested a vastly different ratio for the mix so I wanted to do a bit more searching before trying it. Also, I wanted to try them both individually first.

LOL, here is another one, this is the exact opposite of what I was told:

I'd be willing to bet I you took an empty pappy's bottle, filled it with bourbon, most people would never suspect it wasn't Pappy's.

I’ve had Pappys and don’t find it the Godsend that people do - to me it’s okay but not great - but it definitely has a taste profile that is just uncommon enough to identify - I think most people wouldn’t identify it because most people haven’t had it - you have to drink it to identify it.

That is the problem with the secondary market versus retail. I can usually find BT for $30 at my local big box stores, but I can also find the same bottle at my local liquor store, secondary market for $60 or higher. My big box store also puts limits on how many you can buy to help curb the secondary market. I mean I get it. But $100-160 is my max and it has to be something special for me to spend that type of money on bourbon.

Now beer on the other hand, the wife did get me a 2023 Sam Adams Utopia (retail price) for Christmas... and yes it is that good to me anyway! :)

My local big box stores do the same, and some liqour stores don't jack up the price, but many do. I'm with you, if I'm going to spend money it will be on something special, not a $30 bottle marked up to 60+.

I am ready and waiting to pile in if things are opened up to bourbon biscuits...
