No. I have to transcode all MKVs to a more AppleTV friendly form of 720p.
Visual Hub has a preset which converts to files with 5.1 audio.

C.

So no joy with XBMC? Thats a shame, guess its going to have to be a mini then. The extra $200 is worth it vs the time it takes to convert every file i'd want to watch. Thanks for your answer though.

Boxee Tagging

I Love the way Boxee Tags movies (identify). Does anyone know of a stand alone program that will do that for my iTunes movies? (add all the film info as well as artwork).

Shame when Boxee does it, it doesn't write to the file.

I've tried MetaX but thats a bit rubbish compared to the way Boxee does it...

I have been using Boxee on my Mac and on the AppleTV and I must say that I am quite impressed. The interface needs some slight refining but it is an Alpha release after all. As my AppleTV was already hacked I just copied over the BoxeeLauncher.Frapplicance to the Finder plugins directory.

I don't have an atv, but have you looked through the xbmc forums and tried running that?
Great looking and intuative interfaces - I don't think there is any better media center software.

MetaX. Works wonderfully.

Perian updated

In other news, Perian got updated to v1.1.1. Bug fixes, Performance fixes, new codecs.

While the social networking features are nice, Apple TV owners will also enjoy the ability to browse media on their compuetrs, across a network, or on the Internet and playback a wide variety of video/audio formats including hard-drive saved DVD video with menu support.

I think Handbrake is a nice program, plus it is free, but the thing I REALLY don't like about it is the fact that you lose the menu ability of the DVD. This is a nice feature of this boxee program. I only wish that this could be built into the AppleTV without having to use this program. Or if there was a way to access the DVD WITH full DVD menu via the PS3. I know there is MediaLink in that situation but it does not allow you to access the DVD menu and the DVD is accessible only by "chunks" of files with no rhyme or reason. Regardless of how nice Handrake is and regardless of the size of the data of DVDs I still like the menu asepct of the DVD in that you get scene selections, and all the other goodies that are left out by Handbrake.

I love my Apple TV. While I liked some of the 1.x interface better than 2.x, it is overall a great improvement. This Boxee stuff looks fairly lame and I can't see any reason I would want to use/install it. Bad interface. No really great added features. And I'm certainly not interested in running Alpha software period.

So I guess the question is, should I buy an Apple TV now, or wait till Macworld?

I have the exact same problem. Patchstick looks good on my mac, but when I plug into apple tv and reboot... nothing.

Is there some trick to creating the patchstick or rebooting the ATV that we're missing?

I seem to recall that the Apple TV can be quite fussy when it comes to USB Sticks. It used to be that they should also had to be <= 1GB. I used an old iPod Shuffle. Perhaps somebody else can confirm this.

make sure you use 1GB (or more) USB stick and that it formatted with Mac OS.
you can check out the forums on http://forum.boxee.tv for help

sorry about the mouse support thing. we'll fix it in the next version of boxee.

Is there some way to get back to the standard Apple firmware after installing this? I would like to try it but may not wish to keep it installed.

EDIT: I just found the answer on their forum:

if for some strange reason you wanted to remove boxee you can just restore factory settings ( setting>general >reset settings ) via appletv and everything would be back to normal..

find directories

let's me preface by saying I know the least about this technical stuff out of every last one of you...

anyhow, I was able to follow some directions on a website and "patched" over the boxee to my ATV - it looks great and works great except that it does not find my media files that are kept back on my mac. They are all there on my Mac (and on boxee on the Mac), but on boxee on the ATV all the directories are blank and none of "my stuff" is there.

can anyone dumb-it down to my level and help me solve this? TIA
