So i do some web design work for a friend of mine's company.

He has some potential work that is coming up in about a week, and wanted a logo for the site...

I feel im creative, but in no way am i pretending to be a professional graphic designer. (mechanical engineer in training atm)

He gave me very little to go with. I used photoshop (i know i should be using illustrator or fireworks, but PS is what im most comfortable with)

These are VERY ROUGH ideas. so im expecting the "this is amateur" feedback.

    Brain Dump:

    Lets hear it!

EDIT: BTW the current site is rivikmedia.com
it is a work in progress

I think the top-left one is by far the strongest of the bunch, but I'd try and lose the red fill on the i's. It might look better.

I might be wrong, but I think he's trying to make the "ivi" part look like an M, and the K next to that look like an E, which comes before the "dia" - as in, Rivik Media. It's a cool idea but the "dia" part doesn't fit very well.

Thanks, that was my quick journey into incorporating the web into the logo (backslash, forwardslash, and the tags <>)

Of these, I personally like the one on the right with the red flourishes best. It's fairly simple and traditional, but I think a lot of these logo attempts are just too esoteric. Unless you're courting a clientele that basks in the esoteric, I think a text logo that's really hard to read just creates more problems than it solves.

The second from the bottom on the left could be nice if HE did web work. Bumping up the scale of 'media' and simplifying a bit. But what does he do?

didn't explicitly mention that. The company as of now does web design. I function as an aesthetic input for that company on certain projects.

The founder would like to expand the services of the company which likely means the web style logo is a bit focused

In that case it's still an interesting direction. I don't actually think you need the closing bracket piece as the slashes sort of get that point across, but in a subtler way.

This is also just my thoughts on what a text based logo would look like. I haven't even begun to look at images at the basis for a logo

everybody who took the time to share their thoughts, thank you

I've always liked simple over people trying to be too cute, so the bottom right catches my eye.

But of course it is harder to add as anything other than a graphic on stuff.

    A very related question:

what is the deal with using fonts off of sites like dafont.com?

if they are free to download, are they free to use? albeit copyrighted?

dafont.com will have a note by each font saying (see attachment).

They also often come with licences in a text file when appropriate.

Contact the creator if worried :)

Same here. It's the most unified of them all. It looks really nice.

Second bottom on the left for me too. Has more consistency!

Might be worth trying it with regular I instead of \ /. Another good thing with it is that you already have a smaller logo without the lettering you could stamp everywhere : k >.
