I don't think there's a choice as to whether they ship it out or repair it in house for a lot of repairs. A battery replacement is going to require a topcase replacement. I don't know if that's ever done in-store. There aren't a lot of reports of laptops getting fixed while they wait on MacRumors. It's almost always an unhappy report of having to be without their laptop for 5-7 days.
I brought my 2nd one to my closest Apple store with the plan of having them fix it, and they gave me the option of leaving it with them or having them ship it out (to wherever?) and said that it would be "about the same amount of time" for whatever that's worth. Again, though, I'd rather have it shipped out rather than fixed by some local guy, since I wouldn't be surprised if the "shipped out" approach might result in them simply sending back another sealed unit rather than actually fixing *my* unit and sending it back to me, but I'm just spit-balling.

I wound up spending $400 more for an Apple refurb 2019 MBA with 16GB and the 1TB SSD. I think I probably saved myself $400 worth of grief buying the 2018 from B&H, although they certainly seem to have stepped up to the plate to remedy the problems with the older units.

The current-iteration MBA is a beautiful little machine, and certainly a welcome change from the 15" and 16" MBP. I had thought I'd probably never own another MBA after the 11" was discontinued, but I'm feeling pretty good about this purchase, which ticked all my boxes at a substantially lower cost than a loaded 13" MBP.

I ended up returning the computer for exchange. We’ll see what they do.

On a side note, the gold 2018 MacBook Air 16GB 512GB is back down to 1199 on their site. Looks like they have two in stock.

Ugh, went and checked after I read your message. I spent a couple of hours to think about it and by the time I went back to the site to get one, they were gone. It's also possible that they were entered in error.

There is an insanely good deal on Apple Certified Refurbished 13" mid-2017 MacBook Pros on eBay right now. If you get it before the end of the day today, it's only $874 for a 8GB 256GB model. There's more than one up for grabs.

I'm slightly kicking myself because I just paid that much for a used 2018 MacBook Air, but I'm not kicking myself too hard. It won't make that much of a difference for my wife's needs whether she gets an Air or a MBP so I'm not going to bother returning the Air to jump on this instead.

I found 8GB and 256GB to be too limiting, myself. Once I got close to that 256GB limit (not hard to do), I found myself having a lot more issues with the fan running, things grinding to a halt, etc., as I suspect that my RAM was at the limit and it was attempting to use the SSD to substitute for RAM, and after having owned it for a while, the disk was likely very fragmented. Personally, I'd prefer a modern Air with 16GB and 512GB storage (as this post was about) over a Pro model with only 8GB and 256GB. Just my opinion.

Very happy with my MBA 8Gb and 128Gb (25Gb used) after nearly 15 months of use as a full-time workhorse.

hello
does someone knows what is causing this?

is it the smc controller or the flat battery?

is there a way to jump start the battery ?

I to have a MacBook Air 2018 that has a ”replace now” battery with 1 cycle count :)

Brand new out of the box battery has 4Volts and zero charge remaining , battery not charging
kernel task is at 200%
% system 75, user 21, idle 4
laptop is unresponsive and laggy.

thank u for any answers

ps: I also have a MacBook Pro 2018 TB also with depleted battery but that one is running ok (also new to of the box) battery condition replace now, battery not charging , but runs correctly with idle at 98%.

has anyone have there laptop (one as above described) got fixed by changing the battery with new battery ?

my guess is that the pro has different smc controller than the airs, thus different Behaviour

I assume that because of the long periods of time while battery stood uncharged, the batteryes are in deep empty state. that is why there not charging , I know that lithium batteryes have protection if they discharge below some point and after that there not allowed to be charged ever again for safety reasons . has something to do with the acid inside the cels. If the volts goes down a certain point its good bye for that battery, the accid inside the cels corrodes the elements and thus can make shorts between those elements and if that happens and you try to charge the battery, well, it explodes.

so I think its a safety measure for not charging them .

but what if you change the battery ?
has anyone tried this ?

I called apple and they told me that I have no warranty on both o them ... still I asked them if this happens if the batteryes goes flat, and they refused to answer.

hello again

this is the fix > replace battery
MacBook Air has different power management from 13 pro

so if your battery goes under 10 volts and 0 mAh then the battery does not recover anymore. it dies . the interface between the battery and the logic board writes zeroes to it and thus the mainboard will not ever charge the battery again.

maybe if you use the interface between the battery and the logic board from a working battery let's a 1000 cycle count one, than you could use your "replace now" battery elements with the 1000 cycle count interface.

interface = those chips on that battery logic board that connects the battery to the main board.

so > easy fix, just replace the battery you do not need to return your product let them fix it for you ... replace the battery . no mainboard problem, no smc ... no nothing ... a f....g idiot battery that drains under a certain limit ... like above explained . so ....

never got an answer from nowhere on the entire network

as soon as I plugged in a good battery (and by good I mean one that had 11 volts on it and 0 mAh) ... fans stoped from blowing full speed, battery began to charge.... kernel_task dropped at max 10% on cpu , idle 85 %...

tried to give power directly to the + and - terminals on the old battery ... (voltage raises from 4 volts to 8 volts... maybe I should have been patient enough to raise it till 12 volts ... so it does charge) ... but seems that this is not enough... meaning that the chip on it is dead... so that even if I was able to raise the battery voltage giving it direct power... still the macbook won't charge it- giving the same message > replace now, battery had only 8 volts... will give it a try and let it charge to 12 volts (outside macbook)... and see what happens then and get back with results... I think it will not charge inside the macbook, but who knows.

so do no let your Macs (mobile ones) sit uncharged for long periods ... the battery will fell under a stetted limit and will die and no longer will work ever again, even if it has 1 cycle count for the reason in previous post stated .

good luck.
