I have a brand new iMac i7 3.4ghz with the upgraded 2GB graphics card. It is completely stock and fresh out the box, with no programs installed but Chrome. Running 10.6.8, all updates installed.

The hard drive fans run at just about 5k constantly. Nothing is in use. I turned it on, it was fine, and then I get home, and it sounds like a vacuum cleaner. I think "huh, maybe its running scripts in the background and needs some time." So I left it alone for a day, and the entire time, fans aplenty. I then restarted, and, the fans are on as SOON as I press the power button. I tried this:

no luck. Activity monitor shows... nothing. Absolutely nothing is running. Disk activity is at zero.

Any ideas? I am strongly considering returning this machine.

The fans were probably loud, the whole time, even in the store. You probably didn't notice the fans because of the sound of other people made. Which made it harder to hear the fans.

I would recommend going back to apple store to see what the blue shirts guys/ geniuses can do about it.
