I have a brand new XS Max that won't charge unless the screen is on when I plug in the charger.

Is there a solution to this?

Do I need to exchange it before it's too late?

Have you updated it to the latest iOS? Are you using genuine adapter and cable?

Go to Settings>Face ID & Passcode>USB Accessories>OFF (default) Is it on or off on your device?

Thanks for your quick reply.
1. The OS on my phone is: 12.3.1 When I go in there it does not tell me I have new updates.
2. I did what you said. Will report back later tonight if there are changes. However it was never more than an hour from the time the screen was last on. But we'll see what this does.

Ok, I did what Banglazed suggested.
Namely turning ON the: Settings>Face ID & Passcode>USB Accessories> making sure this setting is ON
seems to work.
Must be a bug though because this is somewhat unrelated.
However it works.
I will charge it again tonight and report how it went.
Yes, I will return if it won't work.

I plugged it in last night while the screen was on and it worked fine.
So clearly this USB setting, although only partially related, seemed to do the trick.
Sounds like a bug.

From what you started, it does seem like a bug. I recalled a previous iOS version this issue did happened but you are on the latest iOS. I could not replicate it whenever I charge my device while the screen it off. However, USB Accessory switch is still on OFF. It seemed you have the opposite effect. Have you tried to turn it off USB Accessories then restart your phone by:
  1. Press and release the volume up button.

  2. Press and release the volume down button.

  3. Press and hold the side button.

  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.
After the phone boots up, enter your passcode. Press and release the power button to put the device into sleep/turn screen off. Try to charge it again. Did it work properly?

Tonight when I was going to sleep I plugged the phone in the charger when the screen was off and the phone never reacted at all.
So I opened it up and there was no sign of the phone charging.
I went through your steps above and after first turning the USB Accessory switch off and then rebooting the phone (followed your steps word by word) it worked!
Plugged in the phone with the screen off and it started charging.
Don't know if this is a permanent fix but it sure would be nice.
Thanks a lot for your help

The default is OFF for USB Accessories. It seemed yours might have been glitched. The steps above was to force your device to restart as an alternative way if your device was unresponsive or frozen. Hopefully, it shouldn't rear its ugly head again.
