HAVANA, Cuba - Gustav has grown to a Category 4 hurricane with 145 mph winds, U.S. forecasters said Saturday, as the storm pummeled a Cuban province, threatened Havana and led to the evacuations of more than 240,000 Cubans.

The storm is responsible for 81 deaths in the Caribbean.

Along the U.S. Gulf Coast, thousands fled New Orleans and other low-lying areas ahead of a possible Tuesday landfall.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Gustav could become a Category 5 storm — the most dangerous level — packing 160 mph winds as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico.

National Guard?

No, they're already there. I'm active duty, with a sustainment brigade (we provide supplies and transportation, among other things). Right now we have the mission of severe weather response for anything the NG can't handle.

Oh! My friend does that too. He's in Texas as well. :)

You can't take chances with hurricanes. I have gone through two category 1s and one category 3 and these weather systems are nasty.
I remember being stationed at Homestead AFB in the mid 80s and we had certain things we had to do when a hurricane was approaching. I lived on base so I had to climb up our palm trees and get all the coconuts out so the wind didn't turn them into cannon balls.

New Orleans residents are going to get another wake up call as to why you shouldn't live somewhere that's below sea level.

If McCain wants some brownie points he should uproot his convention in MN and hightail it down to LA to help people get out. Buy bus passes and the like before this hits.

your wording is brilliant! that made me chuckle. i would have never thought of that.

scary stuff.

i'm glad I live in Canada. we may get slammed for being more conservative and we have lots of snow, but that's nothing compared to hurricanes, out of control wildfires, earthquakes and other natural disasters.

My heart goes out to those folks. I hope they get out of town right away. it does look nasty and it's been rare that the weather folks have been wrong about a hurricane.. :(

UPDATE: New Orleans mayor orders evacuation

NEW ORLEANS - Mayor Ray Nagin is ordering the mandatory evacuation of New Orleans, turning informal advice to flee from the approaching Hurricane Gustav into an official order to get out.

Nagin said Saturday that the evacuation becomes mandatory at 8 a.m. Sunday on the city's vulnerable west bank. It becomes mandatory on the east bank at noon.

The announcement comes as officials continued to evacuate the elderly, disabled, poor and others without means ahead of Gustav's march toward the Gulf Coast.

In it

Yes, contra-flow will start tomorrow around 4am. This is when all lanes of traffic are opened to move in one direction with the help of crossovers.

I will be going through the storm at my home, I will be in St. John Parish for those of you that will be watching from afar. Please keep our members in your thoughts and prayers, I know BackToTheMac in particular had a rough time through Katrina.

More updates later.

Wow, this is terrible, although I'm glad the evacuations are starting much earlier now.

When you think of it, I'm lucky I left Cancun early this week, and not next week like I was planning to. I just hope everyone else has my luck and manages to leave early...

Is there any particular reason you aren't evacuating if I may ask?
