Was reading in the paper that a healthy set of adult lungs should pull in 10-15 breaths a minute whilst resting. Counted mine and got 6, even though I don't do much exercise these days though I'm never out of breath.

    Yourselvesssss?

Breathing is one of those things that becomes much harder if you think about it. Now you've started this thread, you could be held responsible for the death of others.

    I hope you're happy

And 15,473,672,334,123 on just one of your palms :p

I just counted for 3 minutes and it was exactly 12 per minute for each of those minutes.

When I first tried I couldn't stop coughing so it shot up to 24 but I discounted that due to the illness.

I run around 7 p/m. Counted for 3 minutes and took an average.

I'm a first year nursing student, and we covered this last week. Normal for an adult is between 12 and 20 BPM.

I got 16. I heard that it should take about 5 seconds for each breath.

    Seriously... 6 ?

I've always had a slow breathing rate but I can't run for too long without getting tired our or anything beneficial like that. Just tried again (first was in the morning) and got 9. That's a little more human :p

18 for me, unless I'm sleeping, then it can drop to (0) but not for very long.

Interesting thread, I looked at it earlyier, then it played on my mind, and as it's a bit boring here at work I decided to get the old stopwatch out, I get 13 ,tried it 3 times and got 13  each time, (is that lucky or unlucky) so that's killed a few minutes just another 7 hours to waste till i can go home.............................. wonder how many ceiling tiles there are in here

If I know my breaths are being counted, I can't do this task accurately.

Men really are bad at multitasking.

Six is around your normal basal metabolism rate.

If you're awake, alert, sitting upright, etc, you're burning energy at higher than basal rates, so the breathing rate is consequently generally higher.

To hit 6/minute when awake, it generally requires one to be generally fairly "Zen" relaxed. Doesn't mean that its impossible...just uncommon for most people.

I breathe each minute, yes. How many breaths I don't now but it's significantly more if I've had coffee. I tend to breathe shallower and thus more often with caffeine in my system.

That's actually a very good point. If you breath deeper, you get more O2. So you may breath at a slower rate.
