Hey guys,

I just graduated college (Youngstown State) with a degree in Business Administration (and a minor in Political Science but nobody cares about that ).

My sister surprised me with briefcase as a graduation present (which was thoughtful of her)...as a kid, I always imagined being a successful businessman with the signature black suit and briefcase, but now that I graduated, carrying a briefcase around just seems so out-dated.

This brings me to the reason behind the thread: what does this generation of professionals use to supplement in place of the more "traditional" briefcase?

I was thinking maybe a really nice leather messenger bag - something that I could use to carry my macbook and some other essentials to an interview, or to work or (grad) school.

What do you guys think? Are there any other young professionals on here that work in business or practice law, etc. that use something more "modern?"

Any advice, suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :D

No, most people wouldn't carry around a briefcase anymore, but I doubt the most professional looking, fancy black/brown leather messenger bag would stand out as much as a briefcase. ;). I think it's cool, much in the same way I think antique cars are cool, or 3 piece suits, or even something like.....my calculator watch. I even think the old, wooden temperature-barometre we use at the hospital moat regularly is cool.

The briefcase is a very good choice for times when you are wearing a dark suit and want a classic look. A job interview is a good example. The messenger bag is a bad look there. Also, it's worth noting that briefcases are very practical for presentations and other times you are caring a bunch of paper files you need to keep neat and organized.

But otherwise I agree. For less formal meetings or just coming to and from work, a leather messenger bag or one of those over the shoulder carry-alls in a very good fabric or leather is a better look.

Myself and a few of my friends carry bags - kind of like messenger bags, but without the flap - from brands like Tumi and Briggs & Riley. I prefer the ballistic material over the leather, but whatever floats your boat.

yeah no one uses briefcases anymore.

instead more like a general bag type thing that can be worn over the shoulder.

Personally, i dont have anything wrong with briefcases and in fact i think briefcases have a "cool" factor to them, but you have to make sure you are able to pull it off. If you can pull off wearing a fadora, a briefcase is plausible.

p.s. why is this on this thread topic? should be more of a community discussion topic.
