Today I had a problem with my 13 pro. I sat in the sunshine and all of the sudden the screen turned so dim that I could not see anything .Funnily enough I was just reading this forum and the screen became dark. I didn't touch the brightness, it's the same from day 1 , the slider around 40%
Stayed like that for a while, I moved to another webpage and the same, I turned off the phone twice, same thing. I had to move the brightness slider to around 80% to see
True Tone is on and Automatic appearance is off
a while later even in the shade I was still having problems with the brightness.
Only later on came back to "normal" Now it's nighttime , the slider is gone back to about 40% brightness
Also comparing side by side my 6s and my 13pro. Same settings. The 6s is much brighter
Do I have a defective screen? Surely not being able to see in the sunshine unless I move the slider way up can't normal . Never had this issue with my 6s. Only happened today though

When the phone heats up, it will dim the screen. This forum is known to heat up phones (do a search, there are multiple threads about it), so that along with having your phone out in the sun is probably why the screen dimmed. It came back to normal later because it cooled off.

Same happened to me,.. when facing the sun I could see the slider going down…

Yep as explained earlier. That’s normal if you’re out in the sun for prolonged period. If the heat goes above a specific threshold the screen will dim. If anything the 13 series dims way less than 12 series did.

Use adblockers, people have been complaining about ads here heating up the phone.

If webpage ads by themselves are pushing the phone beyond nominal heat thresholds and triggering thermal protection features (such as the screen dimming) then Apple seriously failed somewhere with the iPhone 13’s cooling capacity.

I fully understand that many scripted graphics ads can place an increased burden on the CPU/GPU, but never to the point where the phone overheats. I’ve never encountered something like that before and I used to be a developer. Most larger ads are tested for performance impact as well.

you would expect these issues with a cheap phone, not with a top of the range phone .
it wasn't even a hot day , just sunny and I've just taken my phone out, it's not like I was on it for a long period. This never ever happened with my 6s

Indeed. Apple should have worked a better cooling approach, but keep in mind these phones have powerful processors. It is virtually impossible not to have thermal issues during sunny days and hot places when running CPU power apps. Cheaper phones won't have the power and capacity compared to these iPhones. As a trick, if you are going to use the phone on sunny days outside, turn on the low power mode. It will limit the CPU and refresh rate but will not impact the performance severely.

It happened to me when using my DJI drone controller. The sun was extreme, and the screen dimmed below 50% in 5 minutes. I couldn't see the screen while flying the drone. So, I let it cool down and turned on the low power mode, and it was better. I didn't need the full power of the phone to use with my DJI drone and RC.
