would it be so cool if old Steve-o would get together with Jonathan Ives and co, and dish out a new slim line 3rd generation? Back with the old school!

Discus...
(no flaming if it's already been thought of)

Nah, I had one and didn't like the separated function buttons as much as when they're integrated into the click wheel.

They were crazy sensitive.

That was Apple's golden age. They hit it absolutely spot on with that!

None of this clicking nonsense. The whole idea at the time was to eliminate physical mechanisms that can fail and/or attract dirt. Then they went and undid it with the 4G!

However I got myself an iPod Touch to finally replace the poor old battered thing, and it became a test unit for my dad's iPod Opening Skillz (to replace a friend's battery). The skillz weren't so good.. it went to the great iTunes in the sky!

Definitely one of the better ones. I think it's finally been bested by the latest models, but it has a place in the hearts of many including myself.

I still have my first and only iPod, the 3G (15GB, albeit with a new battery) and its so much better than having a click wheel...I'd definitely buy a new iPod with that design...

Apple knows they made a mistake moving the buttons up there away from the wheel. The 2G was easier to use than the 3G. I think the 3G was the worst one.

Well I think the design is wicked, I do like the merge with the click wheel, however, I love the look of the four touch sensitive buttons that are complemented by a really sexy clean touch wheel.

This is sad to say, but between me and my wife and daughters, we have every
iPod beginning with the original (which still works) and the latest editions (I just bought the Touch...and have no plans to buy the nanos or upgrade my 60G classic)....and I have to say the the 3rd gen is the ONLY iPod that crashed on me.

maybe a little something like this..

i think it would be cool. but i think apple likes to stay away from too many 'buttons' these days.

I love my 3G iPod. Granted, it doesn't get the use that it used to anymore, but I think it was the best version of the iPod. No moving parts on the outside, amazing.

Absolutely, positively NO!

I'd like my iPod interface to be as simple as possible--that's what made the Click Wheel such as well-liked interface control.

why settle with simple things? why not stylishly elegant. We who use the 3rd, I'm sure love the interface. The 3rd is so ergonomic, it's flawless. Which bring me to say, should we really settle for 'simple', no way, thats too boring!

On about the mock-up would it look better if the buttons lit up like the original? I think yes, time to move on from these minimal aesthetics.

You me remind me of J.Peterman from Seinfeld describing one of his coats... Stylishly elegant?!?!

I found the 3G to be twitchy at best, the clickwheel was a godsend.

The click wheel is cool yet unassuming; with an understated flair that inspires confidence. To use it is to touch the heavens. :D

The 40GB 3G iPod was the first one I ever owned. Received it as a gift the Christmas after it had come out, back in 2003. At that point I had a lot of mp3 songs I had "stolen" (downloaded) the previous years . When I got the iPod, I hardly knew anything about Apple (except the computers from elementary school) or iPods. Pretty much became the coolest Christmas gift I ever received.

On a sad note, I lost it in the international terminal at SFO in September 2005. It was replaced by a Nano, then later replaced by a 60GB Video.
