Apple introduced "Shake to Undo" in the iPhone and iPod Touch in iOS 3.0 when it enabled Cut/Copy/Paste functions. Now, a third-party developer has brought a similar "function" to sudden motion sensor-equipped Apple notebooks.

OSXDaily first noticed the software, written by Nate Stedman. It presses Command-Z -- the standard undo keystroke -- when the sudden motion sensor detects movement. There is a confirmation screen that users can enable to prevent accidental undos.

The sudden motion sensor is normally used to "park" the heads of a hard drive to prevent physical damage during a drop or other sudden movement. Solid-state drives, like those in the MacBook Air, are immune to this sort of damage. So, we don't actually recommend anyone use this software, but it's an interesting proof of concept.

No thanks! I admire pushing the limits of programming but this seems to be a ridiculous waste of mind power and man hours. Only makes sense if you're holding the laptop and well, if you're holding it you're probably not typing or doing much input at all.

Awesomeness! Gotta put that Macbook accelerometer to use somehow.

The cool thing about this is you can choose not to use it, unlike iOS. Try writing a paper on a bus using an iPad..

If my friend does something stupid can I shake him?

If this were a feature included and enabled in Lion, it would cause serious problems during an earthquake!

Did none of you ever hear about the hack that would allow you to tap the side of your MacBook screen to change windows, or song, that's where the accelerometer works best. Used to love to use that hack on tiger!

I don't trust spinning platters to save my life contents of anything...I seriously can not wait to get an SSD. I had an external hard drive (seagate) that barely moved completely fail on me just the other day...luckily everything on it had been backed up and my current 1TB Western digital elements external is half corrupted...never had this happen with flash memory. As I type this I am backing up video on dual layer DVD's.

That aside the feature is annoying at times on my iPhone and I wish I could disable it...ever been in a bumpy car ride trying to text a very upset girlfriend and the undo thing keeps popping up? Yeah...
