Bringing a 27'' Imac on a plane

Hi, what I usually do is very simple - put it back to its original box, close with tape band, ... and put a big sticker on it "FRAGILE". That's it and it works for many (over 10 years). I started with the first iMac, the 2nd 15", the 20", the 24" and the 27". Never had any problems. I did the same with bigger screens.

Hi All.

I was hoping to get some further advice on shipping my Imac as plane luggage from the US to Europe.

I've trawled the internet and these forums for ages and have ready all the threads with this same question, still, i thought i'd raise the topic again.

So, on Thursday I'll be taking my 2011 OWC Modded 27'' 3.4ghz Imac to Europe. I understand it is really not the perfect computer to travel with, but I dont have a choice due to work. It will be checked luggage of course. I was thinking of removing the stand, and wrapping the main computer up in an overkill amount of bubblewarp. I have a pretty rugged 30'' Samsonite f'lite hard shell case that I was thinking to put her in.

I was wondering about how I should pad it. Do you think I should just bubblerap it completely so that It fits snug in the case, or is that a recipe to destroy the screen? Would it make more sense to fit into into the side styrofoam inserts from the original box so that the sides of the imac are supported, and then bubblewrap it snug in the case?

Also wondering how likely the TSA are to open the case while they are screening, and if I should cut a slit in the wrap so that they may access the Imac easier and repack it it easily?

Has anyone shipped a 27'' Imac in this fashion and can give me some advice? Or any thoughts advice from anyone at all would be appreciated.

Cheers!

Thanks again for the replies.

Too many comments to reply to individually, so Ill reply to individual points in a more general sense.

Im actually going for 5 months, so not really a business meeting more so a long term production where I'll be spending 8 - 10 hours a day on the system.

Also consider my budget is quite limited at the moment, which is why some many of your posts which make a huge amount of sense, I cant go with because of the cost. Thats also why I'm avoiding any method that will attract their attention. For he who mentioned that you can get your money back upon leaving the country again- thanks for mentioning that. I have been told about that option before. It seems like a good fall back, but still I do expect to be a pain in the ass to get it happening, along with lost time due to my system sitting in customs. Ive run Carnet's through Germany before, and this sort of thing drives me nuts, language barrier, forms in German which I dont speak well, EC Cards, the delivery guy just handing you a invoice for hundreds of dollars and a release form, not being able to communicate with him properly due to language barrier, and then watching said person lugging everything back down 4 flights of stairs in a bad mood cause you weren't able to resolve things, etc. Perhaps I just suck.

On Taking a Macbook Pro- I actually have on that Im taking with me on board. However, I need some serious horsepower and storage capacity that mine doesnt have. I guess I could get by well with a new top line MBP decked out with ram, a 4tb Pegasus thunderbolt enclosure, and buying or hiring a screen over in Berlin, but alas thats some serious dough, and not so into that in general.

Buying or renting 27'' Imac over there probably would have been my best option, but stock Imac doesn't have enough HDD space for me. I have my current unit modded by OWC with an External Sata port and a 2tb drive. So getting an Imac over there, Id have to bring a thunderbolt enclosure over with me. Again, cost. I am bringing 5 HDD's with me apart from the imac btw.

As has been suggested,I'm confident that I can re-create the same effect of the original packing inside the samsonite, cutting the styrofoam and such, perhaps even get the box in there somehow. Im feeling confident that I can make this work. Comments regarding TSA opening the suitcase, good point. At LAX you do watch as they check your luggage, so thats a good thing. I'm going to try and get the packing right so that they can more easily access the imac for a chemical swab and wrap it back up…somehow. Perhaps Ill have to include a "dear TSA" note inside begging them to show some care when re-wrapping, heh. For some reason in my head, this seems like better protection than the original box, even if its double boxed. The samsonite case I have is very hard.

Those of you suggesting special cases for the imac, mmm, some of those make my mouth water, very nice. Some great reviews on them too. Ill definitely have to buy on of these at some point Still, Im thinking that the samsonite with bubbles of air could offer even more protect than one of those cases for certain types of abuse doe to the cushioning effect of the bubble wrap, therefor it could absorb the impact of being dropped 8 feet onto concrete better than if it was housed in the one of those cases. On the other side, one of those special cases would offer more protection from damage due to someone jumping up and down of the suitcase or heavy stacked luggage on top. Still, many of those special cases are way beyond baggage limitations and cost a bunch of cash due to oversize and overweight restrictions. One other thought also, shipping in the original box would leave the Imac susceptible to puncture damage, while the case options are better protected from this.

I know it comes across that I have my mind set and are turning down lots of good advice. Its just that Im set to leave in a few days, and its pretty much too late to take any other option now save fedexing the original box, which neither I nor my wallet are comfortable with. I am fully insured by my workplace / homeowners type insurance, so Ill get fully paid out if she gets destroyed.

This thread has been a great to help me think this properly through, and I hope others come across it when they need to ship an Imac as well. Perhaps they'll be far safer, and ship it somewhere via Fedex in its doubled boxed original packing inside a Pelican case.

Cheers guys, will let you know if she makes it.

P.s. If anyone can point my in the direction of a cheaper alternative to Fedex as some of you have mentioned, please do. For the next time.

Usually do? Im still worried about the TSA and what they might do to it. Open the box, destroy the packaging etc.

I wouldn't risk it. The price you pay to lower the risk almost comes to half the computers value. If I were you I'd get a MBA for travelling.

I wish I saw this thread earlier as I would have suggested taking a boat/cruise to your destination rather than flying. You would eliminate the hassle of going through security theater (TSA) and be in charge of all of your belongings at all times.

Good luck in getting your iMac to your destination in one piece R3k.

Does someone knows who the OP plan turned out? I've been browsing through a bunch of "imac on plane" posts and I've seen a lot of ideas, but not many speak of their experience AFTER they tried any of them. Is that because most people end up giving up on this?

Hey a bit late to reply but if you are sending it for work Fedex it to a company office. Inter office transfers of equipment are not subject to customs charges.

I have shipped 3 27" imacs from the US to the UK this way and none have been damaged or had any ill effects. All have been shipped in the original packaging.

I have also taken one on a plane in a flight case which cost about $300 (but work paid) but that was worse. It came out on the carousel and I could see it bouncing around through the curtain, I would rather have sent it Fedex at least I can't see them stamping on it ;)

Results...

Hi.

Sorry I havent got back to you guys earlier. So this is how it went:

You can find pictures of a few of the stages here:
http://www.thedeadindustry.com/Imac/

So, I of course decided to ship my 27'' Imac as check in luggage, for a flight between Los Angeles and Berlin via Zurich.

Following the advice I found online, I decided to remove the Imac stand using a plastic card (credit cards are too thick) and a T10 screwdriver. There is a good Youtube video of this, search for "removing imac stand" on the webs.

I then placed the imac in its original paper sheath, and heavily wrapped it in bubble wrap. Heaps of bubble-wrap. I wrapped it as much as I could and still fit it in the suitcase.

Out comes a "Samsonite F'Lite 30" hardshell suitcase that I bought especially for this task. I own 2 x F'lite cases, they are really great, solid cases.

I heavily padded the bottom of the suitcase with bubble wrap to eat some of the space, and then squashed in the bubble wrapped Imac on top of that, screen side down. It was an extremely tight fit: the case was hard to close. Anyway, I made sure that there was no way for anything to move around, and that none of the imac edges were too close or "one bubble away" from the edges of the case. I then put my winter coat on top of that pile, to eat up some more space, and fought to close the suitcase, which again was very hard to do. Once it was closed I bought 2 luggage straps for the outside of the case, and bound them tight incase the suitcase latches would pop open for some reason.

The stand all all my other computing peripherals went into my 2nd suitcase with all my clothing.

Btw, I made sure that each of my 2 suitcases weighed under 50lbs, so as to not trigger extra luggage fees with the airline. I used scales for this.

My flight was with Swiss air. The check in guy was cool. As the computer was a 2nd piece of luggage under 50lbs, it only cost me $75 USD to check it in. I explained to the guy what it was and how it was fragile. He gave me a bit of an 'appraising' look..but not quite an 'are you insane" look, heh. I asked if he had an Fragile stickers, he looked and said he didn't but said they really dont change how roughly the luggage is handled.

At LAX airport, the last time I had flown out of terminal B, the TSA luggage checks were done while you could watch, but that has changed now, and all checks seem to be done behind the scenes. As he grabbed my suitcase and dragged it to the conveyor belt behind him, I was worried..as I expected to be near the case when TSA went over it. He told me that TSA would call my name if there were any problems. My anxiety level went up even further than it was. When I was packing it, I was planning on cutting a slit in the bubble-wrap so that TSA could access the computer surface for a chemical swab, and also including a "dear TSA" letter inside the case. I never cut the slit, and while the letter was written, I forgot to put it in the case (you can actually see the paper on one of the pics I took).

So fast forward a bunch of hours and I am at my apartment here in Berlin, unpacking the Imac. Everything had felt and looked secure after taking the case out of the airport..The only noticeable thing was one of the luggage straps was a little loose.
Upon opening the case, I find a "Notice Of Baggage Inspection" leaflet from the TSA. Arghhhh. Upon 1st glance, all the packing seemed to be how I had left it, but exploring deeper I could see that they had cut open the bubble-wrap "envelope" to remove the Imac. They had obviously made some effort to get the packaging back to a state as secure as it had been…I'd give them an 85%.
Upon pulling the Imac out, I notice that there are cut marks all over the back of the Imac from a Box Cutter blade. Yay. Seems it got in a knife fight with the TSA, and some guy was cutting away at the bubble-wrap into the back surface of the Imac.

Apart from these scratches, everything was working fine, and no other damage. I consider myself lucky that the TSA guy didn't attack it from the other side and put cuts all over the monitor face.

One last problem I had was trying to attach the stand. The spring loaded 'thing' that you attach the stand to had popped back into the Imac while in flight. I had to loop a whole bunch of electrical wire through the screw holes and pull it out back into position. This is really hard, requiring lots of strength and something to protect your hands, like an oven mitt or such. Eventually I was able to get it out, re-attach the stand, plug everything in and boot up. All good.

So..the computer is insured, but the damage not so bad that I feel like going crazy on a claim and getting the back out the unit replaced. So the back scratching is likely here to stay, unless I decide to file a claim after I get back to the USA.

Would I do it again this way? Yes probably. Shipping the unit properly, as many have suggested in this thread, is way too expensive for me. That would be with Fedex inside its original box, or perhaps a pelican case, + customs duties, through you can get these back once leaving, through it is a hassle.

What would I do different? Cover the computer in cardboard, especially the screen, so as to protect from knives. Leave a note for the TSA on how to unwrap the computer, and wrap it in a way so that it is easy for them to open and wrap it up again.

I am not as worried about taking the system back to the USA, as I feel the security here in Europe wont be as interested as the TSA in the US. That has been my experience thus far.

That said, I cannot recommend this method at all, it is indeed playing with fire. if you can afford it, ship this the proper way with the proper protection via a proper carrier.

Again, please see the pictures here:

Please note the pic with the styrofoam corners is for reference only, it was not packed that way.

Cheers guys!

This post has been extremely useful for me. I am in a similar situation and i would be transporting my 27" iMac from Singapore to Washington. Have a hard shell suit case which i intend to use to pack it into. Plenty of bubble wraps and then carton box sheets to protect it from the TSA blades. I will also be including a letter to TSA to handle this item with care. Hope i am able it bring this baby safe to its destination. I will keep you guys posted. Stay tuned.

Interesting story R3k thanks.

So after this ordeal if you needed to do this again would you consider getting a macbook pro instead of or perhaps as well as your iMac to make the situation a whole lot easier?

Cool. Glad to have helped, and looking forward to seeing how you experience works out.

Hi.

I actually already have a Macbook Pro which I use for normal day to day tasks, but alas it is not enough for my production needs. Perhaps a latest gen one would be closer, hmmm. However, Ive travelled with my MBP in the same capacity before when my needs were smaller, and it just wasn't as robust in operation as I needed- as a desktop system provides. Im not sure if even a new one would be enough for my needs.

So anyway, yeah, id def consider a new MBP with an array of Thunderbolt drives the next time i need to do this, cause it was an ordeal as you have stated. Still, it was really great having the Imac here.

Gator case option

Sometime ago I purchased a Gator GL-LCD-2224 case for transporting a 24" LCD monitor. I plan on purchasing a 27" iMac soon and am hoping that the computer will fit in the case. Based on the dimensions of the 27" iMac, it should just barely squeeze in there, despite the case being designed for a 24" monitor. The big advantage of the Gator case over the iLugger is that the Gator is lined with 2" of polyethylene foam in all directions, providing some serious shock absorption. Again, I haven't tried to fit a 27" in the case yet, but it could be another option for you.

I went to India with a Macbook Pro and took a bus to Dharamsala, an overnight ride that was the most bumpy ride I ever been on. It was like they had no suspensions, and they rode into huge potholes now and then.
I was amazed my MBP was still working :)

Update:

I was able to check in my suitcase just fine. Pasted plenty of Fragile stickers around it and the airline staff was kind enough to attach some priority baggage stickers to it as well. I am at London heathrow now ... So far no problems .. Let's see how this shows up at its destination. Fingers crossed... Stay tuned

Flew once from the US to Brazil with a 32" LCD inside my luggage.
No problems at all. No customs charges, nothing.

Protect it nicely and you won't have problems.

Good luck.

They may treat it better in future if there isn't a picture of a grenade on your luggage? Just saying ;)

Lol.

No customs love for the bunny grenade....

_________

Btw, she arrived safely back In the US with 0 problems. The case was not opened, all good. :)

Shipped mine recently

I shipped my 27" last month from Hawaii to Vietnam on Philippine Air Lines. Fortunately I had kept the original suitcase style box and the foam inserts. The box just barely makes the maximum allowable dimensions for most international flights. It would be oversize for a domestic US trip. I stuffed a few extra cords and hard drives on the back side but did not put anything extra on the screen side. I think my HDD is failing now but that is a coincidence.:(

I think the best way to do this is to use an hard shelled suit case and add plenty of padding using bubble bags and cushion. This tricked worked for me. The original iMac box could have offered the protection that a hard shelled suit case would.
So if you have an option of using a suit case, you should probably go with that.

Great thread! Am just about to move from London to Dubai and unsure of how or even if to move the iMac. Reading this I'm half tempted to flog it (it's a 2011 model) and rebuy at the other end.
