A friend of mine will be traveling from the U.S. back to Europe in late October and he's going to bring me an iPhone of my choice (if I wish so). I have two questions:

1. Will the international 1 year Apple warranty be valid in the EU?
2. Is there going to be a problem at Customs if he carries the phone in its original wrapped packaging, whether it's in the carry-on or the checked baggage?

Thanks in advance!

I wouldn’t expect any warranty issues with Apple, but you’d be liable for VAT and import duty when bringing it into the EU as it would be above the personal import allowances.

Whether the item would be found is another matter - most countries work the basis you declare it when brining it in, or risk penalties if it’s discovered when going through customs.

This. AFAIK, Apple’s warranty is not tied to the country it was bought in. Although, you won‘t get the benefits of the EU‘s mandatory 2-year guarantee. But you have to pay import taxes ( it‘s usually about the same amount you‘d pay for VAT in your country). As far as I know, there are no punitive duties on electronics from the U.S. Yet. Although Trump is hard at work making it harder to sell U.S. goods internationally.

No problem at customs as long as you declare it - and a gamble, if you don‘t.
