Didn't they come out with a movie on that, last year? The End of the Spear, or something along that point.

Shrug. I don't think it's a big deal. Men shave their heads all the time. I think women shouldn't feel as if it's not a viable option, too.

Besides, she's going through a helluva lot. Must be refreshing to change something up.

Maybe I'm stating the obvious here but a large apart of her appeal was looks and the whole "sexy" act she had going on-stage. While women should certainly feel free to alter their appearance however they like, her baldness detracts from the image of her as a sex symbol.

K-Fed lucked out. He doesn't have to wake up in the morning with a bald Britney staring back at him.

Come to think of it, I guess they both kinda look alike now.

I get that. I do.

But is she on tour? No.
Is she working on a film? I don't think so.

And you're missing my point-- my critique was about 1) she is still a person, and a young, confused, hurting one at that, and 2) that men (in general) are allowed to be shaven and considered attractive while women (in general) aren't.

At any rate, to continue your line of thought-- that's what wigs and hair/make up crews are for.

Has she tried the whole "sex tape" thing yet? She should. It could get her another 2 or 3 minutes of fame.

Maybe a minute or two, but not much more. People would say "it was about time" and that's it.

I think she skipped step 2: Rip a photo of the Pope on a national live late night show.

Yeah, like that has helped before...

her baldness detracts from the image of her as a sex symbol.

Just a bit

Which is why she probably did it; disappointing millions who've come to view her as a piece of meat, although she's been complicit in that as well. America eats its young; but nonetheless, good on her.

2) that men (in general) are allowed to be shaven and considered attractive while women (in general) aren't.

Yeah, but that's probably mostly biologically hardwired in at some level. It's like the hips and breast thing, we're programmed that way. While you can precondition and learn some attraction, other parts of it are hardwired. If every woman was bald, then I suspect we'd adjust the parts of the programming that defined attractive until some rebel went and grew her hair out.

It's funny though, we like shaved legs and armpits on women, but not shaved heads.

Ah, but that's exactly why it's not hardwired – plenty of women are naturally hairy, especially in armpits, legs and other bits n pieces, but as you say, blokes aren't having any of that. And blokes can have just as long hair as girls, but they usually don't. It's fashion and conditioning, pure and simple. And I mean that for any sex – i.e. it's more acceptable for a bloke to have a hairy chest but not a hairy back, or it's bad to have nose hair, but ok to have sideburns, and so on.

You say that as if men are intentionally unfair to women in this regard, and we choose to shun women with shaved heads, whereas women are kind enough to overlook it. I understand that attractiveness is in some way impacted by society, and that it changes from society to society or over time. However, it is not actively chosen. We (men) don't disallow women to have shaved heads, most of us just aren't attracted to it; it's more an emotional response than a willful decision. If women want men to be attracted to them, they're the ones making a choice.

I think that train wrecked a long, long time ago.

It's like she's actively trying to kill any chance of a career revival. Oh well. Somehow, I'll manage to cope. ;)

what career are you talking about. she was horrible to begin with. it's no surprise she would do this after realizing how stupid she is

Britney... *yawn*...

It's really a shame that she gets so much attention. She is not news. It's an entertainment (and pretty poor at that!) story. I'd like to think that if the news media payed alot less attention to Britney, she wouldn't be doing these things. But I bet it's the opposite. She does all this stuff to be an attention whore.

This has been a train wreck waiting to happen. She's destined to crash and burn. There have been plenty of celebrities that have handled their problems with class and dignity and gone on to live long, happy, successful lives. Then there are those that have gone where Britney seems to be headed. Regular, ordinary everyday people have dealt with far more personal/physical tragedy and handled it and overcame it. First thing she needs is look in the mirror (and not from an aestethic point)..

I still think it's hardwired. Shaved legs show off the curves more, and the curves are what's wired in, as is a like for lack of detail- which is probably why the "shaved" look works so well below the beltline. That's why our reactions to advertising images sync so well with clean, curvy lines. There's some cultural bias for sure, but it's mostly early-age stuff that doesn't bring fairness and isn't necessarily linked to fashion as much as it is convention. That's why pictures for englsih speakers work best left to write top to bottom, but those don't work as well for say a Japanese person.

I also think there's some level of hardwired hairy<->testosterone thing that happens.

The really interesting thing is that sexy pretty much crosses cultural lines except at the "fetish" ends of the scale where things like hair work differently for people who have that sort of set to themselves.

She's a singer who can probably attribute a lot of her success to her looks, so I'm not sure if it really matters that she's not actively touring or in a movie.

I don't think it's bad per se that she shaved her head, whatever her reasoning is; it's her hair and body to do with as she pleases. I'm just rather surprised, given the nature of her "job", that she choose to do it.

As far as women not being considered attractive when shaven - I think another poster summed it up best. It almost seems hardwired into men to look for certain attributes, whether it be genetics, "societal norms" or men just being men. I think a full head of hair makes a woman more attractive; I think the vast majority of men would agree with me. That doesn't mean a woman with a shaven head isn't attractive; I just know what I prefer. =)

Which is why she probably did it; disappointing millions who've come to view her as a piece of meat, although she's been complicit in that as well. America eats its young; but nonetheless, good on her.

I don't think Brittany is smart enough to have come to this realization on her own and cut her hair as a response- why would she want to bite the hand that feeds her? I think Devilot is right on target here - she's just a confused kid who wanted to make some changes in her life.

I also feel very little sympathy for her. She's exploited this same system to make more money then any of us will ever see in our entire lifetimes; this just happens to be the price she pays for it.
