broken display&input not supported on the external screen

I dropped my Macbook pro and broke its display. I was attempting to hook it up to an external screen and while setting the display preferences I got a message that says video input not supported. I’m sure that I configured incorrectly the resolution. Does anyone know how could I revert or get something going on the external screen? The laptop’s display is completely broken therefore of no use…Thank you.
