I'm using the thin aluminum USB external keyboard and suddenly my 8ik, diagonal of keys stopped working (now I'm using my laptop keyboard). Anyone know if this is typically a sign of a broken keyboard, or a user issue?

How does Apple feel about the warranties on these items?

Its a failing keyboard(as long as it isn't liquid spill). I'm pretty sure you only get one year warranty out of anything unless you buy the extended warranty. Did this keyboard come with a unit? If so, the keyboard should be covered for as long as the units warranty is in good standing. If you bought it separate from computer and got the protection plan, they sometimes include items on the same receipt.
