Broken/Missing Emoji in mavericks

Strange one,
since installing mavericks, some emoji seem to be missing.
they don't load system wide and show up as a square if sent by someone to me. these are just the standard emoji.

is there a way to reinstall them?

(i know this is a bit trivial)
