From the picture is looks like latest model MBP 14" or 16".
Since OP did not even mention about using warranty, I suppose it was due to some accident? If not, then warranty should cover it.

You're correct. It was an accident, no apple care; I've never bought it and yes 2021 14in M1Pro

Do you have home insurance? Depending on small print (terms) and company they might actually cover accidents like this with some nominal pay per accident. Not sure that is the same everywhere but at least here in EU it is common.

Also, some credit cards will cover damage like that if you bought the item with them.

I heard some credit cards do, unfortunately the one I used did. I will be getting a new AMEX however, because I think that’s a great extra perk

$785 to get it fixed through Apple. Took it in on Friday and it’s already on the way back to me today. Hopefully in a couple weeks I’ll forget that it was ever broken.

Ouch. Just the screen or the total bill? In any case, it's a substantial quantity, any chance you can get AppleCare+ now it's being repaired/certified to prevent these amounts in case any other accident happens? I will definitely ask Apple for that, in any case, my best wishes to you, hope you get it back ASAP and perfectly working.

If it's not too much to ask, how did it happen? Cause I can't see cracks on the screen, did something drop while it was closed? I use mine 99% in clamshell mode in a stand in front of me, so even I'm super-cautious, I'm afraid this can happen some day.

I was told at the store I should be able to get Apple Care now that it's fix, I plan to follow up on it. I planned to keep this laptop for several years, so it's needed.

Not too much at all; I was carrying my kids up the stairs and accidentally stepped on it. I felt it immediately, I think I just stepped on the perfect spot to ruin the screen. I ordered a clamshell this morning.

I am not sure clamshell will help a lot to avoid breaking the screen when stepping on a macbook. It would still flex in the middle.

Applecare+ for portables is the way to go given the accidental damage coverage and high risk of potential occurrence on the go (even around the home)! The one year annual option makes it a no brainer, IMO.
