HP now stands for "Horrible Printer" I just replaced the last HP printer I will ever own with the Brother Laser B&W Printer noted in the title. Just for grins just before I removed the HP I tried to print on it one last time. It presented me with blank pages. I setup the Brother via USB for now. I will do the WLAN later. Once setup I printed some pages on it did 5 pages in the time it took the HP to do 1/2 of 1 page. The cartridge yield on the HP is less than 300 pages. The Brother came with the standard cartridge. It is good for only 1200 pages, it costs $44 bucks. However I also purchased the high yield cartridge and it does 3,000 pages, $74 bucks. One of the things that sold me on this printer is people like me who don't use a printer very often told me they have had the same cartridge in for as much as 8 years and it still prints normally. I sat down and though about what I actually printed and a concluded I did not need a color printer. nor did I need a scanner I never used them. The Brother is a top discharge printer this is nice unlike the HP's I have had that as often a not just floated the pages off onto the floor below the printer.

You know they have Punkin Chunkin contests in Oklahoma. I wonder if there would be any interest in a HP Printer Chunkin contest. 'Lookie dare, that there HP5550 flew 3400 yards'.

I have an earlier version of this monochrome printer and it still works beautifully.
Especially after my last parent died, I did wish I had a scanner function (I had recently retired and no easy access to a scanner) but soon a version of iOS allowed me to "scan" documents with my phone, and I'm good with my setup now.

As I was testing this printer what struck me was how tight and competent it worked. Very quiet, you don't have the swip-swip sound of the ink carriage moving you get on a HP Inkjet. It just quickly kicks out the pages. One thing that gave me pause for a second of so was the pages came out blank, OH NO!!!!. But then I discovered the print side comes out face down.

Another thing I like about this printer is it is rebuildable. The toner cartridge is the whole ink assembly, and it slides into the replaceable drum unit. The high yield toner cartridge is good for 3,000 pages, the drum unit is good for 12,000 pages. If you look at brothers parts list they support primers made over 10 years ago. The cost of these replacement parts $80 bucks for the toner cartridge, and $108 for the drum unit.

A tip about the drum unit. If you replace it wear clean out of the package cotton gloves, or surgical gloves. a fingerprint on the drum roller ruins it.

I very like the Fujitsu scanners. Having a dedicated scanner really is a way to go especially the way the Fujitsu's work./ They is you don't need high volume they even have a mobile scanner.
