I have a Brother DCP-L8410CDW printer, which connects via AirPrint to all the devices in my household: my Mac, five iPhones and three iPads. It used to work fine with all of them. Now it works with all but my Mac. Some time ago it started acting up, like trying to print and saying the printer could not be contacted, then trying again, and again, and then finally printing perfectly upon the third or fourth attempt... things like that.
So, a few days ago I tried to fix it by removing it from the list of printers and adding it back. Big mistake. The removal went fine, but now I can't add it back to save my life.
When I open the 'add printer' window, here's what it looks like:
The printer is recognized, but there's no automatically selected driver, and consequently the 'Add' button is greyed out.
The list of options looks like this:
If I choose 'Auto Select' it thinks for a while, then reverts to the initial state, with no driver selected and the 'Add' button disabled.
If I choose 'Select Software', here's what I see:
That's all. No Brother. No generic driver. Only these, none of which is suitable.
There's obviously something wrong with my macOS installation, though I can't figure out what. Missing printer drivers, perhaps, though everywhere I look, everybody says I shouldn't need to add any external drivers for AirPrint devices. They should just work, period. Brother doesn't offer downloadable drivers for macOS, on the grounds that macOS should use AirPrint, which should work out of the box (and which indeed, it used to do for six years, until now).
If I try to add the printer manually by IP, same result. It fails to select a driver, and I'm not shown a suitable one in the list.
Resetting the print settings doesn't do anything. Neither does a restart. I'm on Tahoe 26.6.2.
Any suggestions?
