Browser and Messaging Defaults don't stick

Hello,

I can't some of my program preferences to stick. I will try to set my default browser to Firefox and my default messaging client to Adium, but most of the time (not all the time though) when I restart the computer it reverts back to Safari and iChat. How can I keep it from doing this? I just want my preferences to stick.
