For some reason, I can browse to my Cisco switches with Netscape, but not with Safari. Safari flags a warning about no java installed. Yet I do have Java 1.4.2 installed. Ideas?

Safari is confused

Your screenshot tells me that Safari is looking for a plug-in that handles Java 1.22 applets and doesn't realize that Java 1.42 should be able to handle it. Perhaps you can work around the problem by adding the MIME type in the screenshot to Safari's list and pointing it at Java 1.42.
