Pipex are doubling my 512K to 1MB for free. but looking at the BT page I can get 2MB for £1.50 a month more. Hmm. Does anyone know if the router they're touting is ethernet. The page says if you want to use ethernet you must have an ethernet card but the minimum specs are for a free USB port? Does that mean it can do ethernet or not? Couldn't find anything to say it does but couldn't find the opposite either.

The router that I got from BT (Voyager 200 I think) has both USB and an Ethernet connection, BT may have been replaced with a newer model but I would think that it has both connections

i pitty you people i have the near ultimate set up, 4M/bit down 400k up for only £20 a month from bulldog (it's 30 but you save 20 from not paying bt line rental) an ethernet router thats solid as a rock and my airport express that covers my whole house,

i could not abide by a download cap, screw that.

ukonline now offers 8Mbit for £40 a month, but i'm ok with my 4Mbit

But until more exchanges are LLU enabled, most of us are stuck with standard ADSL which pretty much tops out at 2MB and most of the ISPs are moving to download caps to improve the service for those who don't hog the connection with P2P and gaming. Sure, they provide free USB modems since as Apple found with USB cables and iPods, it's what most people need. More discerning users will replace them with routers.

Sure we'd all love higher speeds and no caps but since Bulldog and the Plusnet 4/8MB service is only available in a limited number of exchanges (not even all of London is done yet), there's not a lot we can do about it - the pity doesn't help. ;)

Pipex

I have a Home Business account (static IP/no bandwidth cap) with Pipex and they've just upgraded me to 2mbit for free.

Coolies! =]

monthly caps usb modems and lack of wifi is like hell to me

I used to have a monthly cap so I know what it's like!

I've never had a USB modem though. And I don't have WiFi, although my brother does and keeps having problems with it.
