Where do I go from here? I've had this for about 10 days so far. The wee scroll-ball has just stopped scrolling down. Horizontally and scrolling up is fine though.

Which Apple number should I ring? Suppose it doesn't help that I'm going on holiday this Sunday...
 
First, try putting it upside down (with the ball down) on a piece of white paper, and rubbing it around hard. Should clean it up, and it should work ok. The scrollball is notorious for jamming in just the way you described, probably just needs cleaning.

If that doesn't work, bring it in to the store you got it from, or call the main AppleCare number if it was bought online.
 
If you've only had the mouse for 10 days then just take it back to where you bought it from and get it exchanged.

Otherwise you'd probably need to call the main AppleCare number.
