Can anyone just quickly explain to me how to use the buddy list.

Well I think it has many uses, but my use of it is primarily in the Forum Spy. Members who are on my buddy list have their posts show up as a highlighted yellow.

It's also an easy way to keep track of which of your favorite people are online. You can pop up a window with the Buddy List in it, much like an iChat buddy list.
