Go for Crucial memory. I called up apple one time and it was the only brand their engineers recommended. Its cheap too.

Now that it's been a longer time, I'm looking at picking up the Komp Bay RAM again due to the super low price and was wondering if anybody else had tried it yet and can hopefully confirm that I just had a bad set of sticks.

You've bought and returned it once and now you're thinking about buying it again? Just spend the extra on something good.

Crucial, Corsair and g.skill make good stuff.

Why bother even calling it 'budget'.. Buy something you've at least heard of, or ask.. :apple:

Chances are it will be good no matter what, but if you have ANY problem and it is caused by trying to save $10 on a $2000 computer.. C'mon.. Really!!

** And as mentioned above, make sure you can EASILY return if any issues.. and if not buying local, you WILL be paying Shipping on that I am sure!!

What he said. I bought from OWC and I paid a little more, but I didn't buy a $399 computer either. So an extra $20 on 16G I would gladly pay for lifetime warranty ram . I just ordered some GSkill from newegg for wife yesterday (16G) for $69. I'll let you know how it is.

Hey everybody. I am looking to upgrade my late 2011 15" MBP to either 8GB or 16GB of RAM, but am not sure whether to go with the Komputerbay "budget" RAM or a Corsair or OWC "name brand" RAM kit. Not sure what the difference really is because it seems that they're both the same speed and would therefore act the same, since RAM, form what I've heard, it really either hit-or-miss.

So it's between:
Komputerbay "budget" RAM
or
Corsair "name brand" RAM
and maybe even
OWC "High end" RAM

I've heard great things about OWC but am a little hesitant to buy because of the high price relative to these others. Almost $100 more. Does it really make any difference?

Have any of you had any bad experiences with cheaper RAM (or even good experiences with higher-end RAM)? Or is it all the same? Thanks so much for your time, best wishes to all, and for those of you upgrading to the new MBP when it comes out, enjoy your machine! It should be great!

The Komputer- Bay. Says Not MAC right on the add!!!!!

Working just fine in my late 2011 MBP. Not a single problem. I think I paid $20 more for it back in July. C'est la vie.

The super-expensive RAM is not worth the money. But I do think it's worth spending a few extra dollars on a brand you've heard of from a retailer you trust. I think Crucial strikes a good balance.

And for what it's worth I've used OWC RAM and when I did have a problem their warranty process was super easy. So at least they stand behind their product and support their customer.

I ended up going with the Corsair and I love it. Will be picking some up for a friend's birthday soon.

Since prices dropped I decided to get 16GB of RAM upgrade.

First i got Mushkin set 1.35v from new egg (based on info here that this is reputable brand) at about ~$69 plus tax. Computer was booting but memory was causing issues - distorted screen, weird sounds and then the black screen. I paid shipping and got refund. After paying the shipping cost this online deal wasn't that attractive anymore.

I figured Frys has pretty good price for Corsair Venegance 16GB 1.5v set for ~$67 + plus tax. I bought the memory and installed it. Computer booted one time only, then issues, then it wouldn't even boot.

At this point I started thinking that my MBP 2012 might be the issue.... But I decided to give it one last try. I went into Frys again and bought the second set of Corsair - I hoped that may be I will be able to combine two working modules from two sets.

But it wasn't needed - the second set I bought just worked.

I was looking at the Venegance but couldn't find a price I liked at the time. I've got another friend's mac to upgrade, how are you liking it so far?

I'd say Kingston's RAM are pretty good and 'cheap' too. I believe Apple used to use Kingston RAM.

I'd always buy budget RAM but at least buy something that you've heard before.
