new home, networking, cat 5, etc.

Husband is architect/builder, just finished building our own home, did cat 5, have same issue; called and spoke to a tech support person at Linksys, recommended EZXS16W Etherfast 10/100 16 port Workgroup switch (for example, $99.99 at Compusa right now) plus EtherFast CAble/DSL Router with 4 10/100 switched ports, BEFSR41 (for example, $59.99 at Compusa). the router uses only one ip address so Comcast Cable/Road Runner etc. will not have to deal with 16 different ip addresses.

Have not bought it yet, just got recommendation; will be buying and installing and configuring, etc.

Thanks to all who shared their experience.

Also, they make something called HAL. It connects with your Phone Lines, and you pick up the phone, and you would say..."HAL, Im going to bed". It will shut off lights, set AC settings, turn off pool, etc. Read about it.

I can't believe whoever designed this system named it HAL. It's like naming your hotel the Bates Motel.

I think that's a clever name. If you were driving down the highway and came to Tom's Motel, Dick's Motel, Harry's Motel, and the Bates Motel, which one would sound most interesting to visit? And which one would you mention to your friends?

I'll remember HAL because of the clever name.
