Built-in microphone issue - MacBook 13"

Perhaps you guys can shed some light on a problem I've been having with my internal mic in my MacBook 13". I record a lot on Garageband and often switch back and forth between using the internal one and plugging in an external one. Now I'm not sure if switching drivers frequently is the cause of this, but lately I've been noticing a loud hissing sound when I record using the built-in mic. Anyone have any experience with this or any ideas about what it could be?

I would guess either a corrupted driver (as you suspect) or a hardware issue (something isn't grounded right anymore inside your MB). Is the machine still under warranty / AppleCare (Apple might be able to pinpoint which)? I've switched back and forth from a M-Audio Fast Track and just tried recording silence and don't get this hissing. If you have an external mic why would you want to use the internal one? Sound quality for music wasn't one of Apple's key requirements when designing the internal mic port.
