My built-in speakers just stopped working and when I go to the sound preference pane, NOTHING shows up under the output tab. Am I suddenly missing a driver or does anyone know what might be going on???

I get no sound, not even the boot sound when I start the computer. Ack

It's an older Powerbook G4 running Leopard.

Further to what BV has suggested, did you have headphones in before this problem started? Take a peek into the audio out port to see if a red light is showing. If it is, then you need to wiggle and twist the audio jack of a set of headphones in the audio out port to free up the speaker cutout switch.
