Really Google? You better have some clever plan with this because BumpTop is a useless and stupid idea.

I can't think of how Google will improve this usabilty-wise. If they had been acquired by Apple, perhaps...

Wow, why all the hate? lol

There is great potential here people, just because Schmidt backstabbed Apple and now Google is in the phone business and soon to be tablet business...lol

Competition is healthy, keeps things innovative and helps bring prices down.

It'll be interesting to see where they implement this.

I tried this a while back. The one gaping flaw that I saw with it was that it only replaced the desktop, not the entire Finder interface. The result is that the way you interact with files on the desktop is vastly different than the way you interact with files in Finder windows. That just doesn't work.

Having used a number of 3D interfaces, I think that this one comes closest to being a useful interface. However, as has been noted, the interface is on a 2D screen, and therefore real 3D interaction will, by definition, be limited, at best.

Someone asked about glasses-free 3D displays. What I've been much more interested in is display-free 3D interfaces. These typically use glasses, but need no display. Using built-in displays in the two lenses, the glasses create a "hyper-reality" 3D interface that you see floating above your desk. They kind of change the definition of "desktop" back to what it used to be...

This is the sort of thing that makes people play around with it for a couple of hours, then realize it's more cumbersome than the original desktop format. Problem with these kinds of 3D desktop is they do not improve usability of any kind. In other words, utter rubbish.

Unless they do some serious research in improving the usability of these 3D Desktop Environments, otherwise they will never be implemented and integrated to the future OS releases.

I actually played with it for around half an hour, and moved it to the trash. It adds ZERO to me.

Of all the complaints I have about Google, human interface isn't one of them. They've done a pretty good job making usable applications. I'm not impressed with BumpTop for a lot of the reasons people already mentioned, but it's possible Google bought them for the talent.

Once I saw that you can swipe across and push everything against the corners, I realized that UI just wasn't for me-- I don't need my computer looking like my desk.

Well.. I think there might be potential for an actual 3d environment. A 3d interface on a 2D screen just makes it more cumbersome, it does not add any value. I admit I have never touched, perhaps I would feel different. It just looks like a mess.

I don't see how that could be called "more productive" in any way shape or form. A lot users already have a tough enough time organizing and keeping their desktops clean. I cant imagine what would happen when those people use this. I guess hoarders would like this. "I know that photo is here somewhere, check that pile of files near the corner, behind the other pile near the corner."

I'd be willing to bet they bought the company for something more general, like a multitouch patent.

Oh noooos, it wasn't an Apple preso, so I'm probably required to hate it. If not I'll get lynched by the Appholes on this site! :D

Beware!

Google is dead so is 3D desktop and same goes to Adobe, Flash, Microsoft, Linux, Commodore 64 and Amiga OS 4.1! :D

Holy cow! If Apple ever did this with their desktop OS I would buy a Windows computer immediately. In 15 years, I've never considered switching. THIS would make me do it. What a mess.

NoOOOooo, not the Amiga! :( We better tip toe in these there parts, or we'll be dead... ¬¬ :)

++++

Well, I tried downloading this and it was so slow -- the connection that is -- and it stopped prematurely. I guess their site is getting hit. I'll have to try again later.

Sorry!

All, everything, everyone is DEAD!

Death by Steve for the win!

Long live Apple and iDevices

Another week, another buyout from Google or Apple.

Okay, Google, now you have me at a loss. I have no idea how this is gonna be useful.

And that's why you're not working for Google.

A simple reason could be a preemptive move to snatch the tech from Apple's hands who have applied for a number of 3D OS patents.
