Burn v iDVD

I tried to do an MKV in iDVD, but it won't take it.

Does Burn 'burn' MKV to DVD without having to convert it, and does Burn make better copies than iDVD. I find iDVD are a bit jerky/jumpy when converted to iDVD?

Or is it better to transfer the MKV to avi, and what with?
