Burning AVIs to DVD

I just tried to burn an AVI to DVD (to watch in a DVD player) but it came out as just green. The menu and stuff worked fine but when I clicked play it was just all green. I was using iDVD. I was hopeful that it would work because iDVD seemed to accept the AVI format. Now I'm assuming that I probably need to convert it first so I was wondering what format works best with iDVD or does anyone have any suggestions of the easiest way to get an AVI onto DVD?

Roxio Toast Titanium works well too and is a good general CD / DVD burning program.
