I have a friend on another forum who just got a new macbook with an optical drive. They are trying to convert old photos to an iphoto album and then burn them to discs for the holidays.

They can't seem to do it and said Apple no longer lets you burn discs from iphoto. Instead, they want you to store them in the cloud. Of course the people they are making the discs for don't have the cloud.

Is it true that you can't do this anymore and if so, what is the best way to burn photos to a disc?

Yes, burn is gone from iPhoto. You can just drag the photos out of iPhoto to a folder on your desktop then right click the folder and pick "Burn to disc...".
