I have a 2015-2016 MacBook Pro. It wouldn’t charge, so I got a new charger. Still won’t charge. Dropped by an Apple store & the non-tech girl at the desk told me the port was burnt and that I would have to pay $700 to fix it. That fixing just the port could not be done - it’s all one piece and requires replacement of everything. She also said there was only a 50-50 chance that my data could be extracted. Wtf? I need other options as I cannot afford $700. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Check out their YouTube channel if you want a good reference of what and how they work.

Go back to the Apple Store and have a Genius examine and run tests on your Mac. You need to make sure what she told you was accurate. If the Genius backs up what she said, look at a third party repair or buy a used Mac.

And you probably know this, but be sure to make a Genius bar appointment beforehand. It can be a very long wait if you just show up.

Your average retail assistant is pretty clueless. They hire for personality/appearance rather than knowledge. I once had a floor staff girl tell me I couldn’t use the 18 W USB-C charger for my iPhone XS Max and I should get the 12 W iPad charger (which was basically the same size and not USB-C) instead. I had to politely tell her she was wrong and I wanted the USB-C fast charger, thanks!

Having said that, I’m sure even the “genius” will do what they can to make it an expensive repair. Their repair business is likely extremely profitable. They want you to essentially pay retail for a whole new motherboard, then they fix it cheaply and use the fixed parts for future repairs or refurbished models.

Ship it to Rossmann. Support Right to repair so we're not all saddled with replacing entire boards when just one small component needs to be replaced. It's ridiculous.
