they have these things called ear buds or heaven forbid speaker phone
I have always referred to this as a folding iPad mini that happens to make calls, which is exactly what I have been waiting for for years. 😊
So, you won‘t mind the clunkiness, holding this to your ear?

I think you're forgetting most of us had their first mobile phone that was much, much bigger and thicker than the Duo will ever be! Phones were large when held up against ears.

I'd imagine they figure the buyers of these are quite likely to be using AirPods all the time for phone calls.
Perhaps they'll even need to buy a new set!

who cares? Only MacRumors readers are so obsessed with how something looks while they use it. I’m sure it makes and receives calls just fine. The end.
Plus, it’s close in size and shape to a bunch of old BlackBerry units, and those were (supposedly) peak phone, when people still made phone calls.

Phone? If my iPhone's phone app disappeared it might be a while before I realized it was gone. lol.
But really, the phone part of the iPhone is actually my least used function. Especially now with cellular watch and AirPods.
The Duo is really my used case.
All of the books I read are via my iPhone 15 Pro Max.
I had that and the second latest iPad Mini. But found my self just using the phone.
So I sold the Mini a couple years ago.
But at the end of last year I gave that to my daughter and got a used 15 Pro.
Now reading still OK, but a bit more effort on a smaller screen.
So I could get a 18 Pro Max and a TBA new Mini. Or pay $200 more for a Duo.
That would be more convenient.
I'm usually ok with being a early adopter, but would like to give the Duo a few months to simmer and see what it looks like after daily use for 6 moths.
But really, the phone part of the iPhone is actually my least used function. Especially now with cellular watch and AirPods.
The Duo is really my used case.

It’s remarkable how the thing that gave it its name has lost so much meaning. Perhaps time for Apple to rebrand it as iThing or something 😀

what's wrong with that? don't you remember old pre-iPhone phones that tried to be smaller and smaller? I had a Nokia that was so tiny the microphone only reached to the end of my sides
Not sure, to be honest….. It’ll all depend how that extra width feels in my hand. But 98% of my calls occur either hands-free in my car, or in my office on a business phone system, or at home where I’ve still got landline and cordless phones in every room on both floors of my house. I have one number that rings all three places, and when I’m home, my cell phone lives in a dock in the kitchen so I just answer on the landline phones. Obviously this is just my case usage, and I know many people only have a single cell phone in their life these days, but it’ll be pretty rare where I actually have to put it up to my ear.
One thing that does suck about this….. I absolutely hate hearing other people’s speakerphone conversations, and this device will clearly encourage more speakerphone usage in public. 😄

Yep, not a single image of a person holding that phone to their ear.
The point is how they‘re not even showing this use case at all (phone to ear). I find that remarkable for a device that is called iPhone. Don‘t know if you could call this wrong, but apparently avoiding showing this device will now cover one side of your face.
Which IMHO is precisely the reason Apple seems hell bound to avoid using such images in their materials (kind of the pont of this thread).

I have never held a phone up to my ear per say. I always go into another room and put my phone on speaker. It feels awkward and strange to use an iphone up to my ear.
I think people also are forgetting just how absolutely bonkers and bizarre it was to go from holding an iPhone 4S or 5 up to your ear, and then changing to an iPhone 6+ or galaxy note.
Yeah, it was kind of bizarre. For the first three days or so, maybe.
And then it just became normal.
Same with sticking AirPods in your ears, weird at first, and then became normal.
The exact same thing is going to happen here, holding the ultra wide phone up to your face is going to feel weird at first? Maybe the first weekend? And then it’s going to become normal.

My current Google Pixel Fold phone works just like that, but it's heavy and clunky to put up to my ear.
I use the hands free speaker mode for voice calls.
Or is it because they would rather demonstrate FaceTime, their calling service?
I also have to ask, because I haven’t bothered to look, does Apple show any of their other phones up to someone’s face? In 2026? Is that like, a marketing photo for the 18 Pro? Someone taking an old-fashioned hold it up to your ear phone call?
