New hardware looks great, the resistance against butterfly has won (YES!!), waiting to update to a new laptop for years...

Only complaint, lack of newer CPUs is really a bit nagging. Nothing bad about Coffee Lake Refresh processors, just that we KNOW in about 8-10 months (probably?), the Ice Lake update WILL happen: 10nm, newer uarch, platform will have wifi6, etc. Whatever thermal complaints that some users are raising about the current MBP16 also likely alleviated somewhat...

Struggling here, wonder how others are thinking? Will waiting just another one year (hopefully less) be worth it?

Do you need a new laptop now? If so you should get what’s available. If you can wait till an Ice Lake MBP comes out then you should wait

Lack of symmetry means no new design?
Nobody even said that
OP if you can wait 1 more year, you should
10nm wifi6 included better igpu and lpddr4 that means another increase in battery life
Better option is to buy now the 16” and trade in for the next one

If you wait for that, when it comes around you’ll think about waiting for the next one. Always wanting the next new thing in tech is a never ending cycle of inertia.

My policy. Jump in. Enjoy it for 3 years then repeat the cycle if a compelling update is available - which I personally think the MBP 16 is, so I’m going for it, just deliberating over exact spec.

Intel doesn't have any Ice lake H series chips. Ice Lake chips are series U which are suitable for MBP 13".
Apple will prob refresh the new 16" inch MBP with comet lake next year.

Theres' not going to be suitable 10nm chips until at least 2021, so even if you wait for a 10th gen upgrade next year it's going to be yet another 14nm part with minimal benefit over the current offerings.

Well, I think we will have MBP 13" with Ice lake by 2020 with new keyboard etc. Dell and other brands are already shipping laptops with Ice lake just U serioes though.

I think OP wants the 16” 45w cpu
If not,yes , next year the 13-14” will get 10nm lpddr4 wifi6

45watts CPU are comet lake which is still 14nm+++ so no real 10th gen.

As you said by 2020 we will hopefully have 13"MBP with ice lake U series and maybe by the end of next year 16" MBP with comet lake maybe just before summer time.

To be honest I cant wait for 13" MBP Ice Lake with new iris graphics. According to other reviews like Dell 2 in 1 seems like a good upgrade specially in the GPU.

Yeah, I searched again and think you're right, no H-series processors for Ice Lake. Anyways, what I meant was whatever 10nm Sunny Cove update of MBP16 that will happen next.

I think some articles mentioned recently that Tiger Lake is being pushed early from 2021 to 2020, wonder if it'll be worth the wait...

If you want a new computer, remember that there is always a shinier, brighter, better computer just over the horizon, waiting to land.

If you need a new computer, you would not wonder if or not to buy. :)

Know what you mean :) It's just that Skylake is approaching it's EOL, and it appears we're on the verge of newer process AND new micro-architecture. May have more weight than other "normal" refreshes.

There will likely be a refresh around WWDC with slightly improved processors, but the bigger jump is likely in 2021 based on Intels road map. Wait if you want, buy if you need it now, there is always going to be a faster chip and improvements coming.

There is always something better coning in the future. The question you have to ask is it worth the wait. I don't subscribe to "future-proofing" or waiting for something better because no one knows what their requirements will be in the future.

Don't bother with Ice Lake. It is good for replacing the old m/y-series chips, but not as good as 8th-gen U-series. It's worse and worse returns above 5W basically.

I don't know why you say that ICE lake is not as good as 8th gen, it may have lower Mhz but it's more efficient. Also Ice lake has both U and Y series just the same as coffee lake. Intel-Slide-10nm-1.jpg

The big difference is graphic performance as new Iris is much more powerful than previous for an integrated GPU

I have waited another year for three years in a row now. Last year I even ordered a new machine, just a week before the Vega revision came out. Returned it, and decided to wait another year. Maybe they also was going to fix the keyboard? Now I just can't bother wait no more. It seems like more of a upgrade than we could ever dream of, and I'm more than happy with the current specification. Sure, a better facetime cam and wifi6 would be great to have, but with my use I will never miss wifi6, and the facetime camera I never use anyway. This is in my opinion is the best time to upgrade the MBP since the original retina in 2012. At least for us mid 2015 MBP owners.
