There may even be two generations of 14nm+++++ processors left. Comet Lake is certainly coming (next spring/summer). Desktop roadmaps also show Rocket Lake, also 14nm+++++++, a year farther out, with no confirmation either way about whether the H-series laptop chips have to go through Rocket Lake, or go directly from Comet Lake to some 10nm variant?

Yep, could be 2022 for 10nm H series. At that point some people buying today might be ready for an upgrade...

I have a Commodore 64 - should o upgrade now? I’m worried that Apple will release a better computer next year.

They already did, five years earlier.

When you’re as old as me, it’s not a good idea to wait for the next computer. Besides, I don’t know what I would do with an extra 64kB.

Well, I think we will have MBP 13" with Ice lake by 2020 with new keyboard etc. Dell and other brands are already shipping laptops with Ice lake just U serioes though.
The issue is Intel or ARM, Apple etc etc will always have something on the horizon. THat is how they get people to swap to new models more often than they need. The same game as Car Models in the 50's and 60's. I have waited because MacBook Air was underspec'd and the Mac Book Pro had a suspect battery and then suspect keyboard. Just orderd 16" with all the upgrades except 1TB+ SSD. I keep large files in the cloud. Cannot wait for Santa to bring it....

Absolutely not! Wait until next year and then ask the question again.

I don't know why you say that ICE lake is not as good as 8th gen, it may have lower Mhz but it's more efficient. Also Ice lake has both U and Y series just the same as coffee lake. View attachment 878480

The big difference is graphic performance as new Iris is much more powerful than previous for an integrated GPU

At 5-8W it's better. At 15W and above it's worse. The higher W you go the worse Ice Lake is. That's why you shouldn't wait for it.

ice lake is never going to happen at 45w H series, that’s maybe the best reason not to wait for it.

this is my 4th MBP in a row. Each one had a better processor on the way. I plan to keep this one until I fill up the 8 TB SSD.

You’ll always be waiting. Buy a computer if you need it. If you think Ice Lake is going to be noticeable for you in day to day you are very mistaken.
