I think you should wait because of

-Blu-ray drive
-Quad core processor
-USB 3.0
-Better display
-Better battery
-Better graphic card with more than 128-bit which can use most of the 512MB vram.

Wowowow. Wanna share what you're smoking? Blu-ray in a Mac will NEVER happen. Period. Blu-ray would compete on Macs with iTunes HD, which Apple doesn't want. Also, I don't see what's up with this obsession with Blu-ray. I have one in my PS3, but I don't find the need to buy any movies for it. Normal DVD quality is good enough, and if I really want HD (Transformers in HD looks way more awesome than SD) then I just download it (the Bay ftw).
Summary:
The day Apple will introduce Blu-ray into their computers is when they will not exist anymore.

I really doubt that Apple sees Blu-ray movie titles as a competitor. Did Apple disallow iTunes user to rip or playback audio CD? no.

Personally, I love watching movies in Blu-ray disc format.

Want to share what you're smoking??

Blu-ray will happen on macs, eventually. Are you forgetting that you can store 50GB on a dual layer BD disk? 400GB in the future too, supporting even higher definition images! People want this for data storage, and burning their beautiful HD footage too from their £2000 laptops, and £5000 desktops.

A lot of people want Blu-ray in their machines, Apple are going to start to look really stupid with their 'super drives' in time. If you watch SD TV on a 40" TV you will notice a huge difference in image of BD - so I don't know what you have been doing. And besides, since when has 'good enough' ever been enough for the consumer? Everything in this industry is good enough until something better comes along and eventually DVD will be swept out of the way.

How can you say
Transformers in HD looks way more awesome than SD
?
If Transformers looks so much better in HD, surely that applies for 99% of all other action films? BD makes them all look great.

You might be able to sell some crappy bit-rate 720p HD over the internet, but gaming needs blu-ray for it capacity and the market isn't ready to let go of optical formats yet either.

By no means should you wait though, it is a matter of time. And USB 3.0? You won't see that for a while either.

Ps. I fear i have just been trolled by a young man watching films on a 17" monitor.

I don't care about Blu-ray. Like Steve said, "It's a bag of hurt. You can't rip it for your iPod, if there was software to do it it would take hours to recompress 50GB, and to the average person you can't tell the difference unless you have a $3000+ HD 1080P TV.
Blu-ray is a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. People went from VHS to DVD because DVD doesn't degrade over time, and it is easier to use. But to get people to go from DVD to BR for a change they can't even see unless they spend more money isn't going to cut it.
Just my $0.02!

Well, most Blu-ray movie titles now come with Digital Copy. Just a FYI.

Just to throw in my 2¢
I just got a new macbook pro 2.4 and I think I'll be happy with it for a long time to come. Even if/when they come out with updates for it...unless they are super huge and amazing I probably won't really regret the purchase that I made. I mean I went from a custom built gaming machine with a Quad core processor and a top of the line graphics card, to a macbook pro and I'm completely happy, so I don't think it will matter much when the updates eventually come. Plus, I can always stick some more RAM and get a bigger hard drive if I want any more upgrades, but in all honesty: this macbook pro provides all I really need from a portable computer and I'm completely happy with it :D

I just don't see why people are so pessimistic that there will be a quad core/nehalem chips on the MBP one day later... please tell me the reasoning behind this

It doesn't matter what you say because he doesn't know what he's talking about. ;)

If I were you, I'd wait until August, although I can see Apple updating their 15" MBPs in June or July. I think the most important thing for you to wait for is the possibility of having a 1650 x 1080 screen resolution on the 15", which will help you fit more on your screen. Also, if you wait, your machine may be able to handle 8 GB of RAM like the 17" MBP is officially able to do. I think people have tried with the new 15" MBP, and the most it'll accept is 6 GB.

Personally, I'm waiting for the 15"'s screen resolution to increase a bit. That, or a 17" MBP.

I dont get why anyone would not care about blu-ray if they are going to spend 2000 dollars plus on a device. Blu-ray has already won the format war and its already appearing on mid-end laptop.

There are many 1080p 40-50" HDTVs available under 1000$ these days, the difference between SD (480i/p) is visible even in a 32" 720p tv which sell for 500$. People went from VCD to DVD for better quality, they will eventually do the same and move to bluray eventually, unless they prefer the more convenient digital downloads offered by itunes.

Not going to happen
so many reasons, such a waste of time to explain

Intel Clarksfield is coming - 4 cores for mobile. So, yeah, it is going to happen.

All I'm saying is that Blu-Ray has it's place, but there is far less incentive for the average person to care about it. There was a major incentive to go from VHS to DVD, but to go from DVD to BR doesn't make sense to a lot of people, including myself. You're paying more for quality most people can't see, and if you want to see it you have to spend a thousand dollar plus on a TV, which a lot of people don't have. BR may have won against DVD, but I don't see it replacing DVD's for a long time, if ever.

But honestly, it doesn't matter what I think about BR or what anyone else thinks. Could we please get back to the original question, does anyone think there will be quad core MBP's before the end of this summer? Thanks!

you're saying that because you don't have a blu ray player. there's a big difference in resolution between a blu ray movie and a dvd. especially on computers because the screens are higher in resolution. open a dvd in its native resolution and it doesnt fill the screen but open a blu ray and it covers the screen. its like using a 800x600 monitor then switching to a 1440x900.

There probably can not be a better time to buy....
Forget updates... Apple is unable to even met the demands..

Secondly, I think as Jobs has himself said in an open letter once.. technology is completely unpredictable! If you're waiting for the 'next big update'... you'll always be waiting!

Hope you enjoy your MBP. Fabulous machines they are.. the minute you'll hold it in your hands with the satisfaction of actually owning the beast.. you'll forget all about updates. Mark my words for this!

More like 800x600 to 1920x1200.

I've opened thread similar to these weeks ago and came up to a conclusion to wait for the quad core/nehalem or whatever it is called. As I am currently not in a great need of the laptop, so I'd rather wait till 2010 and see what's available at that time.

Better wait till 2020:

- 36-core nuclear-driven processors, heavy water cooling.
- Virtual 50" screen with 3D capabilities (still with a glossy effect to annoy proffesionals).
- Voice activated commands with multilick functions: you can scroll by moving your tongue or zoom by opening your mouth completely.
- No neutrino-Ray from PHONY (Philips and Sony merged in 2015). What the hell, iPhapple (new name for Apple too)!!!. We need neutrino-Ray capabilities for our real-texture real-feel Wedding recordings!!!!.
- 0.05 inches thick. Still 13". What the hell apple!!! That's not ultraportable!!!
- Time machine actually takes you back in time to the moment you lost that file... Or your wallet.
- 450 TeraByte SSD drive. Optionally, 300 TeraByte Cold-plasma drive.
- Really long life battery (10 years). Still no user-swappable. Come on Apple, what if I get lost in space with no power plants around!!!!.
- Built-in Phac OS Y 11.3 (also known as KodKod). Not only ask you for your administrator password, but argues with you about the convenience of openning that file... And marrying that woman.
- 100 Terabyte Nvidia A-lot-of-Force 240000XGFX. When idle, paints beautiful canvases for you walls and designs buildings. Still no good to play Crysis XXVI. Still defective.
- Office 2019 for Phac is a robot secretary connected to the computer. Brings you coffee too. Still not fully compatible with the GATES version (they change the name of the PCs after Microsoft took over Dell).

I'll probably wait myself till the brain implants in 2030...

Probably we'll be using quantum computers by then with liquid nitrogen cooling.

"oh quantum macbook whats 1+1?" "hmmm somewhere between -

I am not trying to change your mind but blu-ray has more than just watching movies, like its storage capability.

Wont be ready for implementation until the End of 2010.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/21/intels-clarksfield-to-begin-production-in-second-half-of-2009/

Enjoy your 2 year wait.

The article in that link was made in october of 2008 and says that production will start late this year (probably Septemberish, according to most sites). It then goes on to say that we'd have to wait "at least a year" for it to be available to consumers.

That could mean November or October of 2009 for all we know...right about the time Apple did its last revision of notebooks in 2008.

Or at least early 2010 (like how the 17s were updated early 2009)

Where are you getting late 2010 from?

I don't know if the op is even reading his own thread any more since it's been hijacked.

If you look at the buyers guide it says the average update is a certain number of days. From the date that the 15" was released and adding the average cycle the next 15"mbp "should" be out in mid April. This doesn't mean it will come out in April(look at the mac mini). You have some head room though between april and late august.

I also will be going off to college this fall and have been hoping for a revision to the 15" mbp. What it will include idk? But at least I would be able to feal as if I have the most recent model.

Exactly the same here....
