This is a bit confusing can anyone confirm this? I mean I thought the m1 pro/max could handle an external monitor with more than 60hz.
On the other side I'm very tempted to get the Pro Display XDR to use it with my m1 max MacBook Pro and if this information is correct I guess should go ahead and pull the trigger.
I’ve been running a 38” UW at 120Hz and even using VRR (“1-144Hz”) under macOS 12. On an M1 Max 16” MBP. A lot of these max specs are focused on max resolution, and not having to dip down below 60Hz if at all possible to do it.
DisplayPort 1.4 has the bandwidth for ~4K at 120Hz or so, and Apple doesn’t lock down the refresh rate at all here, so it will happily do it.
A hypothetical 6K “Promotion XDR” display is very bandwidth intensive. DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC could probably go up to 100Hz without needing a second DisplayPort 1.4 connection, but only Macs with DisplayPort 1.4 and DSC would be able to enjoy the higher refresh rates. So a Mac Pro with just a 580X would be pretty SOL, for example.
I wouldn’t expect to see a 6K Promotion XDR display until all Pro machines Apple sells can actually drive the thing properly. So at a minimum when the Mac Pro is converted, but possibly much later to allow more time for the install base of Macs to be a higher % of machines that will be fully compatible.
