I’m still rocking my S0. I’ve thus found no reason to upgrade yet lol
Nice to hear. My first AW was an s6 11 days ago but I’m already hooked and would quite like a few different finishes so my plan is to buy a new watch on release day each year to build finishes. I find your post encouraging that I have a very good chance of still being happy wearing my s6 when I fancy it’s SB titanium finish as I collect other finishes via s7, s8 etc purchases.

Have you had one or more battery replacements for your s0? If not wouldn’t the battery have lost quite a lot of capacity by now?

I just updated from my series 4... i was the type of person to upgrade yearly... always on display is nice.. I really think the upgrade isn’t worth it from 5 to 6. In reality the AOD is hardly worth it to me... but I did it. no going back now for me

I own an S5 and for me the differences are far too minimal it wouldn’t be worth it. My next AW will be the S8 as I like to enjoy my watches for 3 years before retiring them to the drawer.

what do people think from SS S4 to a refurbished S5? I can’t decide if it’s worth it

Here’s the big differential, do you want the ‘always on display’? If you answered yes, then there’s your answer. If you answered no, then I would stay with with the Series 4.

I keep reading the S5 always on display is very dark and not very noticeable, is that true? I guess I could order one and see if I like it, there return policy is pretty good

Indoors the S5 is fine, outside not so much. The S6 does improve on the AOD while outside though and is much more readable than the S5 in sunlight.

I had an S5 for a year, SBSS so had the sapphire display. My impressions:

Indoors, the AOD was perfectly readable day or night, any indoor lighting conditions.

Outdoors the AOD was great in anything but direct sunlight - where it was more difficult to read, but not impossible. Depended on angle, whether the screen was smudged, whether wearing sunglasses, etc.

The S6 is a definite improvement over the S5 in direct sunlight, but I wouldn't eschew the S5 if that's what your budget allows.

I think people tend to exaggerate that the S5 is much dimmer because the S6 is slightly brighter and that was one of the key features promoted at the launch. The reality is the S5 is fine. They are the same brightness I believe in every aspect apart from when the screen is idle. I have never had difficulty reading my screen with the AOD.

Features are raved about while they are current but the moment they are improved, people on MR like to make out they were totally unusable before lol.

The most significant Apple Watch feature updates over the years for me were:
1. Always on display
2. Larger screen and thinner bezel
3. Faster processor

AW5 is good enough and i would wait for AW7.

I upgrade every year because i can but not because i needed to.

Or you simply mentally cheat yourself, like I did, and order the Deep Navy Blue Sport band to get a “new watch feel”. Problem solved. 😍

It’s the best blue I ever had and it also fits the silver aluminium pretty well.

I went from AW4 to AW6, the AOD and things from the AW5 at the time were not worth it to me. Upgrading to the AW6, for now, I‘m close to going back to the AW4. The O2 sensor really isn’t that reliable.. I mean it works, but I think at the moment it’s more of a novelty than a tool or strong feature. I don’t really feel I’d adopt the AOD that much and historically, I had no problem with battery life on the AW4 with raise to wake and looking at my watch. The Atimeter is nice, but I don’t really do enough hiking at altitude to need it, and I’ll always have my phone with me when hiking for trails and tracking and that has an altimeter as it is. At this point, I can still return it and just order the solol loop that I ordered with the Blue watch (which frankly is so light blue It might as well be space grey for the most part).

It seems the OP is more concerned with resale value of the S5 than whether he needs the new features of the S6. That should come down to math. Will the drop in resale value of the SS S5 between 2020 and 2021 (the second year of ownership) be greater than the drop in resale value of the Aluminum S6 in its first year?

I don't participate in the resale market, so I don't have a solid answer. But here's some hypothetical math (I'm going to assume that both the SS and Aluminum Watches will be 40mm, cellular and have a sport band (all in USD). Depreciation in value 50% each year (I'm taking the OP's "loses half" at face value). I'm using the hypothetical price of an S7 Aluminum, but if the OP went back to SS none of this math changes other than the difference in price between the two models:

S5 SS
original price: $699
first year resale value: $350
second year resale value $175

S6 Aluminum
original price: $499
first year resale value $250

Scenario 1 - Sell S5 SS now, buy S6 Aluminum now, sell S6 next year, buy S7 Aluminum next year

proceeds of sale of S5 SS - $350
purchase S6 - $499
additional funds required - $149
proceeds of sale of S6 $250
purchase S7 $499
additional funds required $249

Total additional funds required (both transactions): $398

Scenario 2 - Sell S5 SS next year, buy S7 Aluminum next year

Proceeds of sale of S5 SS - $175
Purchase S7 - $499
Additional funds required $324

So, it's $25 more profitable to keep the SS 5 for a second year.

Of course, this is all speculative math as to resale values.

Based on these assumptions, I'd tell the OP to do whichever he pleases. It won't be about the money - if it really is $25, the difference is too close to matter. Paying an extra $25 to have a new watch every year vs. using the same watch for two years is probably worth the personal pleasure/satisfaction.

Is it worth $25 to have the blood oxygen sensor? Maybe. It depends on personal circumstances.

Agreed, I have a Series 4 bought the Series 6. I have had AW6 for 2 weeks and it goes back today. Reasons

O2 - Not very valuable for me. I was hoping for more consistent testing at minimum once and hour automatically.
Processor - Its barely and I mean barely noticeable
Faster Charging - I can't tell based on my usage/charging pattern. I sleep with my watch so it gets a charge in the am while showering and at night while laying in bed watching TV before sleeping.
AOD - That is kind of nice. I found the widgets though updated because of the size they are hard to see until the display comes up to normal brightness.

So todays the last day and I am headed to return it.

I have upgraded my SS watches every year since Series 0. I just like the newer tech. It’s never a single new feature each year, it’s the cumulative updates each year that are worth it to me.

thanks everyone for your input, I will likely wait til S7 then. AoD is nice to have, but to drop couple hundred dough for just that, I can wait a bit longer. Thanks!

hi just seeing this. The battery lasts pretty much the entire day. No issues at all. Maybe I’m just lucky lol
